Post rare or just strange cetaceans.

This is a Southern Right Whale Dolphin which I had no idea existed until today.

that's fucksgusting. how could anyone stand to see or smell that much filth in their "sacred" river, nevermind bathe in it like that. all it's viruses, bacteria, fæces, decomposing animals and vegetation, etc. why are india and china such shitholes srsly.
>>
>>2010632
Because it's "cleansing"
>>
>>2010617
>>2010632
I bet their immune systems are fucking incredible though.
>>
>>2010634
for the river maybe. if enough people steeped themselves in the river and absorbed some of the mercury and acids it might help the river a bit in the long term
>>
>>2010632
When you're housing one billion people and your entire social structure rests on a large majority of people being oppressed, it just sort of happens.
At least we can rest assured knowing that China will probably go belly up and experience some sort of cultural revolution in the coming decades.

This is an individual cetacean more than a whole cool breed but still a rare Rissos dolphin and the coolest cetacean I've ever heard of, Pelorus Jack.

He guided ships through a dangerous strait from 1888-1912. Every ship. Ships would even wait for him. He got shot at once from a ship and never helped that ship again. He was later protected by law. Fucking cool dolphin.
>>
>>2010635
Funnily enough, it is. Indians have the strongest immune system of all humans. I wonder why...

Scuffles with other specimens for territory defense/breeding priority? Idk
>>
>>2010932
>Risso’s dolphin may also be recognised from the extensive lines of white scar tissue that stretch down the sides of the body. These are thought to be caused by bites from other Risso’s dolphins during playing or fighting, although some of the scars may be the result of squid bites (4) (5) (7).

what is roughly the chance of any dolphin in the ocean ever meeting a human being? i'm guessing it's pretty high that they will come into contact with some kind of man-made object (or a ship), but i'm curious. how smart can dolphins really be if so many of them are still blithely oblivious to how much of a shitshoot meeting a human could be? are they not smart enough to understand and communicate the danger or are groups of dolphins largely unlikely to ever be put in a circumstance where they would form a judgment for themselves? are individual dolphin pods isolated enough that if they could understand and communicate, they would likely never get the chance?

I heard from a dolphin researcher that they are endangered as fuck, less than 100 left in the wild. Really sad that they'll probably be gone soon. Viva vaquita

That's like half if not more of our cetaceans though. Hell, we hardly know fucking anything about a lot of them except what we find when on the rare occasion they wash up on shore.
>>

Well, look at cargo cults, ignorant/inexperienced humans are just as dumb. I think the lack of communication and caution/understanding from that is probably because they don't have written language or the means to ever create it. Back when humans relied on oral tradition, which has got to be the best the Dolphins have, information was as reliable as a game of telephone at a 5th grade slumber party. So I'd say they may be pretty damn smart and intuitive and still be dumb enough to approach humans from time to time. Still, I'd imagine the Dolphins that directly interact with humans in the wild is probably pretty small compared to those who never do. When you hear about wild dolphins interacting with humans you often hear they have names and histories which to me makes it sound like these are social outliers who were born less cautious rather than a species wide inclination to be fucked up by humans.
