I would like to start a population of hamsters in my area. I have decided that the golden hamster is the best candidate. There is no threat fron snek here and they could easily out compete and kill mice. I'm planning on releasing in late spring. What would be a good starting population size to release first?
Also, does anyone have any recommendations on other breeds besides goldens?

>There is no threat fron snek here
Cats,owls
>>
>>2002847
We don't really have owls here. They are very rare. Yes there are cats but there are mice here and they survive.

You aren't even trying
>>
>>2002847
Also if the females I release are newly pregnant, would they have enough time to burrow and store food before they gave birth? Releasing females who have just become pregnant would be ideal to grow the population quickly.
>>
>>2002845
Pet hamsters are already assholes why would you want a feral population?
>>
Op where are you located?

SE Michigan

What makes you think there are no snakes?
>>
>>2002884
The only snakes in my area are small garter snakes and they are rare.
>>
>>2002879
Every hamster I've ever owned has been nice.
>>
Don't hamsters live in desert environments? I couldn't imagine any kind of hamster living anywhere that isn't dry.
>>
>>2002849
>be cat
>a new prey is introduced: it's just like the mice you eat before, but it's fattier and slower, and unused to the wild
>nah,i'll keep eating mice
>>
They are domesticated and they won't even have a chance.
>>
>>2002845
>releasing desert animals into a not desert environment
>>
the only hamster species I can imagine surviving there is Cricetus cricetus.

but you'd be introducing invasive species.
>>
>>2002845
When I did my hamster report in the 6th grade, over twenty years ago, I discovered that what you're planning is a federal crime of significant jail time.
>>
>>2002920
Hamsters are from the Syrian desert. OP is in Michigan. Is /pol/ leaking again?
>>
>>2002982
What the hell does /pol/ have to do with this?
>>
>>2002962
The local cats could actually be worth something for a change.
>>
>>2002989
not really.
cats do more damage than any of the animals they hunt.
>>
>>2002989
>>2002928

Are there packs of cat roaming where you live? I'll have the occasional stray passing through but that's it. I think my hamsters will have a chance to get established.
>>
>>2002845
i love watching videos of wild hamsters. they are so rotten mean but cute and clumsy. its nice, ok.
>>
>>2002962
I read that goldens kind of hibernate so I thought they would be a good choice.
>>
>>2002845

Is everyone ignoring

>out compete and kill mice

Lol wtf?

A hamster can kill a mouse, anon.
>>

Sure if you stick them in a cage together.

their average lifespan is 1-2 years.
>>

more like 2-3 you little doofus
>>
>>2003026

Yeah righto, cause as we all know hamsters are incredibly resourceful and have managed to populate every human settlement on the planet...oh no...silly me..that's mice and rats.
>>
Alright guys, got OPs IP adress. Should I ruin his life and report him to the police? Because technically this is a high crime.

I don't know if I want to be that much of a douche though.

At worst he's serious, at best he's a shitposting little gremlin so I think he's got it coming.

Then again, I'm a dick so do whatever you want bro.

that's in captivity you spastic.

>>2002845

Even if a Hamster can eat a mouse, a rat could eat it in turn real easy
>>
>>2003053
These hamsters will all die in a month. OP isn't really doing anything dangerous.
>>
>>2003384
that doesn't make it any less illegal.
>>
>>2003555
>>2003040
Yall shitpost about bugguy too much even when he isnt being a retard like in this case.

OP is a retard and I dont really understand what makes him think that his idea could even remotely turn out good.
>>
>>2003379
well the rat might get eaten by an owl.

This.
Also, it probably won't work. Hamsters can't live in MI.

Not the same person you replied to but..
out of the 12 hamsters I've owned while growing up only 3 (1 dwarf male and 2 syrian males) were quite attached to me, the rest of them were friendly enough to tolerate me. Thier personalites are always a hit and miss, anon
>>
>>2005668
>Hamsters can't live in MI.
Cricetus cricetus can, they're native here and the climate is pretty similar to MI.
>>
>>2003053
Do it. Will also save all the hamster's he's buying/breeding from a painful death

what about the possible property damage if said jackass human's plan actually manages to work out?
>>
>>2006331
By "life", here, I think most anons mean his reputation with the authorities. In that case, the hamsters' lives are obviously worth more.

Hello, bugguy

I'm pretty positive bugguy is here just to shit post and stir up reactions to get people to post more on /an/. And unfortunately it's working because 4chan.

No you didn't.
