Back on topic, me and my autism drew this a while back. Supposed to live on Earth in a quasi-ice age 50 million years in the future. Uses it axe-shaped head covered in armor to ram through thick ice to surface for air and to ambush prey walking on the ice.

I imagined it being 90 meters long, with 2 meter high teeth lining its mouth...

While I cant get into too specific biology because im completely ignorant when it comes down to stuff at that level, the general idea was that this form of reproduction evolved way before they became the species they are now. Millions of years before they were turtle/trilobite-esque animals that lived in large ponds that were created by the roots of plants basically making sections in a large lake. These proto-whistlers would have a hard time leaving their individual ponds and genetic diversity would become a problem, except some of them would be born larger and because of that actually could travel over the ponds into other ones. Millions of years later you have a species that puts a ton of genetic information into one female so that she could lay her eggs in a different pond and spread genetic diversity.

but >>1965102 says that sex is done between same sex couples, wouldn't that make males entirely redundant?
Unless the males also lay eggs, in which case maybe alpha and beta would be a better definition than female and male, if they both exchange genetical information trough a giant wiggly penis and lay eggs.
Or are groups of males supposed to ninja on females egg laying and spray their own genes all over it?

Pic unrelated
>>
>>1990170
Same sex couples have sex and stores eachothers genetic information, and then they have sex with a female and pass along that information to her. Also im just using male and female so that people understand better, it doesnt scientifically or socially apply to them. They used to be monogendered and all lay eggs but the "males" became specialized into just sort of slurrying genetic information
>>
>>1990183
Wouldn't it make more sense for that to be reversed, that is, the strong ones that travel between the ponds carry the genetic information and fertilize the eggs of the small ones that stay in groups in the pond?

There was an "evolution game" on /tg/ few years back where I and a bunch of other anons ended up developing all sorts of alien critters, including pic related, which evolved from a floating squid like creature.

So glad this is a thread! Speculative biology is a very unappreciated subject but I looooove it.

Love your work.

Out of curiosity, do you have anything about the lowlives of whistlers? Its an area that a lot of worldbuilders don't explore, but its a really fascinating part of any society: every culture had its gangs, its youth punks, its druggies, its losers, its malcontents, its prostitutes, its deviants, its criminals, etc., and even though those portions of societies usually get swept under the historical narrative rug, they give great insight into the kind of society it was.

So I was wondering whether you had considered that portion when making whistlers-- how do they drop out, how do they steal, how do they waste their lives till they're middle aged and then attempt suicide? And how does their society look on it?

oh man
you know thats probably one of the best questions ive ever gotten about them and im really sad to say I dont have an answer. Im really ADHD so worldbuilding fo me is very all over the place and sporatic, and its easier to focus on the macro rather than the micro even if im intensely interested in both. Im still really trying to "Work down" the ladder for them. Just now I was writing up some stuff on some of their religious beliefs/habits. Im incredibly interested in their lowlives but I always try to pull from other sources ive made rather than just think up microbuilding if that makes sense? but fuck im probably going to be thinking about this for a while now.

theyre hyper-social in some aspects that would be extreme even to us, which obviously would lead to a lot of really specific and seemingly meaningless social rules/boundaries/faux-pa s.

im kind of just rambling here but i just had a bunch of coffee and this is the only way i can come up with stuff well and think.

One thing I know for sure is theres a lot of emphasis on being in a group, specifically a bubble. Individuality isnt appreciated and is pretty weird to them, but not really in the same way as us. They like to act in small units more than anything, so loners would be untrustworthy in a lot of ways to them. Also give me a second im going to post some shitty religion stuff i was talking about in skype.

"[10:14:30 PM] Julian: okay I had a really silly idea dubbed "the church of nihilism" for a whistler religion but ive been sitting on it all day and I kind of love it
[10:15:51 PM] Julian: it also tied into me wanting a Buddha like figure for whistlers, not Buddha like to them but apparently Buddhism says that on 'other worlds' there will always be a Buddha, so human Buddhists will sort of have this big thing where they want to look for their Buddha and its some figure in the church of nihilism
[10:17:19 PM] Julian: one of the largest religions in their world focuses on a giant robo alien that descended on their planet a long time ago and sort of force started a religion for kicks, and the church of nihilism would have spread off of whistlers sort of being super shocked at something else exisiting that wasn't them but they didn't accept it as a god
[10:22:34 PM] Julian: itd be "destructive nihilism" which sounds awful and anarchist but its more about them destroying old ideals and ideas to form new ones because they believe the ones of the past weren't real/didn't matter
[10:25:10 PM] Julian: religion founded under the horribly sad idea to them that there is no god
like atheists but before science and fedoras
versus a religion that literally still has the body of their now-dead god"

No worries: world building is hard. People are still trying to figure out how all of humanity works.

There's a lot more interest in the history world about the lives of the masses, so there's a lot of great literature about the subject. Recent read I'd recommend is SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard.

Also, for your >>1990775 post, might want to check out the short-lived Futurism movement and their manifesto: its all about leaving history behind and trying to live according to modern times. A few choice quotes from their manifesto:

"We stand on the last promontory of the centuries!… Why should we look back, when what we want is to break down the mysterious doors of the Impossible? Time and Space died yesterday. We already live in the absolute, because we have created eternal, omnipresent speed."

"We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind, will fight moralism, feminism, every opportunistic or utilitarian cowardice."

So the astromorphs from all tomorrows got me thinking about how would other kinds of animals would respond evolutionarly to a zero g environment like dogs and other things humans would take into space with them.
Thoughts /an/?
>>
>>1993951
Assuming that such creatures would be left to their own devices in a zero g environment, and somehow managed to survive and breed (maybe within some orbital artificial environment or something.), they would most likely over time, simply evolve either longer limbs with dexterous toes that would allow them to more easily to grip on surfaces and bounce around, in addition to more flexible bodies in general.
>>
>>1995161
What about any sort of creature with an exoskeleton like flies or spiders?
>>
>>1995183
theyd probably be able to get bigger, and again, spindlier
>>
>>1995183
As flies already got wings, they wouldn't probably change that much, other than simply become relatively lighter and more frailer in body, and maybe slightly bigger too.

As for spiders, long, long limbs, and more emphasis on jumping around, and using their silk to construct pathways for them as in Zero G, they could make massive fucking webs with no problem.

>>1995318
The size of insects and spiders is more due to their shitty breathing systems, which both become increasingly inefficient the bigger the creature becomes. Weight is a lesser factor to their size, so their size probably wouldn't increase that much in Zero G, at least not in bulk. Massively long limbs might become a thing though.

>>
>>2001021
That guy is a major dickhead Ive never had someone respond to me like that before on this board
>>
>>2001021
he's right, though

most people are interested in carnivorous plants because their similarities with animals. if they could walk around, they'd take only be closer to animals, and the only thing that could keep plant and animal apart by then would be their biology
>>
Okay, if you want mobile carnivorous plants think about this:
>Why do they move?
>How fast do they move?
>In what ways do they move that seems feasible?
>Is their mobility energy efficient? (Is the use of energy outweighed by the acquisition of food?)

Unless you go soft-sci-fi and just slap a flower on a frog/dinosaur and give it superpowers.
>>
>>2001187
But an animal equivalent coming from a different evolutionary line would still be really cool.
>>
>>2000818
Heh, it's a snapdragon.
>>
>>2001611
I agree with that. There are some cases where plant behaviour comes pretty close to this, though, like with climbing plants.

Also, while not plants, some molds are great examples of non-animals with the ability to move around freely. Molds are cool in how they don't die if you divide them, but rather, become more individuals.

The Culture.
>>
>>2006704
Tell me about them. Where are they from?

>>2004753
The Qu are a mysterious billion year old extraterrestrials and the first alien race that the human galactic community encounters in All Tomorrows, resulting in their complete annihilation. Having perfected nanotechnology and genetic engineering, they effortlessly subdues all of mankind, transforming the survivors into everything from pets to toilets. They believe themselves to be something like gods destined to remake the universe in their own image, and eventually they disappear, leaving their post-human subjects to their own.
>>
>>2004706
Why is the gun of such an alien creature identical to what human hands would grasp? Was it taken from the humans or is the artist just not so good at designing objects?
>>
>>2001190
>just slap a flower on a frog/dinosaur and give it superpowers.

And thus, Bulbasaur was born.
>>
>>2004706
It even says in the book that the extraterrestrials "eventually subdued the qu". Although please correct me if I read that wrong.
