Is it a productive use of time to argue with others online about politics?
Why or why not?
Arguing with other people can help you hone your own ideas, open you up to new perspectives and lead you in logical directions you never considered before. It's called the dialectic.
It's worthwhile doing it because it changes you.

There's no way possible that talking about politics or religion could lead to something good.
Sometimes. If there's a healthy back and forth it encourages new ideas and helps you argue existing ones better. On 4chan specifically? That's rather rare in my experience, and I tend to just ignore it.

Only true if people treat criticism of their ideas as attacks on their character.

Not really, but it's fun bantz.
Depends where, but on almost any site neither party will ever have their mind changed. They will just fling shit at each other until one of them gets bored or upset.
