I'm thinking of starting something like a music blog where I write essays on things music-related (not reviews). Is this a good idea? My main goal is to improve my knowledge and ability to discuss music. Also, does anyone know a good site to do this on?

It is a good idea. Just make sure you focus on creating content you're proud of, not on marketing and making sure people are reading it.

Good work is its own reward.
