is it ok to take an ssri to deal with the stress of finding an adequate job to support your family with your first child on the way.

No because you'll feel better once you get a better job and you don't want to deal with withdrawals from those drugs while you don't need them. Leave them for people with chronic depression. Don't be scared to apply for all the government assistance and welfare you can, with a kid and a shit job you probably need it. Apply to literally anything you could barely be qualified for, and once you find a good job start taking night classes at community college (or actual university if you want to be dangerous and aim higher) so you can qualify for an even better one.

What you need is

1 a set of balls
And
2 a network of supportive family and friends

No, because they don't treat anxiety: they treat depression. You sound like you need antianxiety medication, not antidepressants.

SSRIs are prescribed for certain anxiety disorders.

They can help, but they take weeks to actually start working, and you have to be weaned off them when you want to stop taking them, which also takes several weeks. Quitting SSRIs cold turkey is a very bad idea. Been there done that. Would not recommend it.

They also blunt all of your emotions, not just anxiety/stress. So your panic attacks/depressive episodes will be less intense and more manageable but your baseline moods will also be much more stagnant.

If you're looking for something shorter term for anxiety/depression maybe ask a doctor about beta blockers or bupropion/Wellbutrin.
