I'm working as an intern to develop a web app (I don't really like it).
Working 8 hours a day at a desk is horrible. I never expected it to be this awful. I come home and have ~5 hours to do what I want, one of those hours is spent cooking, eating.

I'mm getting my degrees in CS and Maths next year.

Is this all there is to life? I don't think I'm smart enough to get further involved in academia. But I love learning so much, and I learn best when there is a course curated for me.

Is grad school a waste? I think teaching maths and philosophy would be really comfy, but I'm not so sure I'd be able to afford it, plus living life indebted to my education seems really stressful. I'm lost here, and I don't like it.

Depends where you live.

If you live somewhere like Canada it's quite easy to take an "outdoor" job.
Otherwise, you're kinda fucked.
>>

That typically involves physical labor. Decidedly not comfy.
>>
There are research jobs that exists outside of Academia.

despite that fact, I still feel like I know next to nothing in my field.

Is college really a meme after all?
>>
>>17269117
I used to be a Math + CS double major as well. Going into full stack for the first few years out of school, to make enough to fend off debt and get myself on my feet first. So I suppose after 2-3 years, either I get an MBA or change fields. I can sympathize with not wanting programming as a career. Anyways thats just me, and yeah college fucking sucked for me, I had an awful time doing the double major, granted that our program was really intense. Anyhow, I regret a lot of it hahaha
>>
>>17269136
I guess that's my plan: work for a bit then see where Im at. I work for a leading company in their market, so the benifits and pay are noice, but I don't think it's really the career for me.
>>
>>17269152
Yeah, you sound like you're in a good spot, nobody starts out where they want to be. Or people rarely start out where they want to be. I handful of my friends + classmates went into investment banking and I can assure you, these "dream jobs" are fucking nightmares. Even the people who seemed to have a goal to land a job somewhere usually end up changing careers somewhere down the line.

Best of luck OP

Life is largely pointless and repetitive.
>>
>>17268873
What don't you like about this? Is it the fact that you only have 5 hours left for yourself? Because that's called growing up.

Sorry but that's a shit mentality to have on life. Maybe you'll understand it after you spend your whole life working and realize that all that stuff you did was for nothing.

I have a similiar problem like you. I majored in Biochemistry, but 1 year in heard, that the job market is terrible, and I most probably won´t be a researcher. On top of that I am pretty bad at memorization so my grades weren´t that great. I changed my major to CS, cause I´m pretty decent in maths and I always did programming as a hobby. My grades are waaay better than in BC, even though the average grades on the exams are worse than in BC and I work way less for it.
Still I have this crippling doubts, that I will always just work for the money and that I don´t follow my passion. Truth is, I find fundamental research about life super exciting, but A) you have to be a genius to get there B) the work itself is probably super repetetive and C) I will probably work at a shit job I hate in the end.
What do you think /adv/ ? should I change my major again, or leave it how it is? I am really struggling to make a decision.
Is office life that bad? should I just kill myself?

It's not a mentality, it's reality.

If the problem is that OP doesn't have time to fuck around like he used to, then he needs to grow up. If the problem is that he doesn't like the work, then maybe he should consider getting another job or another degree.
>>

>changing majors on rumours
At this point, you should probably just double major and finish what you started.
>>
>>17269446
Not rumors, statistics, I don´t know how it looks in US/ anywhere else, but the job market in germany is catastrophical. I´m talking about 10000 people getting their degree in biology and related degrees per year, and 800 new job openings per year.
I thought about double majoring in CS/Bioinformatics, maybe it´s the best

Seconding this.

The reality is if you want to have wealth, children, a relationship...you need to invest time.

If having 5 hours for yourself isn't enough, quit your job. If you need the money that badly that you can't quit, re-evaluate what you're paying for.
>>
I think 5 hours is a lot of time to have everyday. That's assuming you get a goodnight's sleep of 8 hours, that's 13 hours of you not having to do anything relating to work.

If you hate your job then leave and find a new one. Though lately I'm seeing a trend of all kinds of people moving into tech related jobs.
>>
>>17269267
It's not that. I just find the work mundane. Im not really invested or excited about it.
>>
>>17269542
That's a more acceptable reason to not like the work. What would you rather be doing?

For what it's worth, I have a friend who has a degree in CS and maths and absolutely hates his job and is going to quit no matter what before the end of the year. You're not alone in feeling the way you do about the field.

>The reality is if you want to have wealth, children, a relationship...you need to invest time.
>If having 5 hours for yourself isn't enough
Do you not see the contradiction here? Those five hours are all you have to invest in friends, family, a relationship, children. The rest is spent doing stupid shit.

I'm in IT. You know what my life is life? I show up to the office at 8:00 wearing a pair of slacks, sit down at my desk and get all my work done by 10:00. Then I sit for the rest of the day doing fucking nothing, wasting my time, wasting my life, till 4:30, every fucking day. That's six and a half hours I could have spent with my friends, with my family, with my fiance. And it's in the fucking trash.
>>
>>17269557
I think teaching high level maths would be really fun. I also am gonna get a minor in philosophy, so maybe I could teach high level philosophy. Just telling people about something I'm really interested in (i.e. teaching, or lecturing) sounds so much better than sitting at a desk day in day out, working for someone who is getting more money than me. I think I'd be more fulfilled teaching. The thing is: the level I want to teach at requires lots of schooling. Also the pay isn't as good, so Im conflicted.
>>
>>17269627
Then get a job where you're not wasting six and a half hours of your day. If you don't want to do that and prefer only having to work two hours, then quit your bitching. I'm sure your boss wouldn't mind only paying you a quarter of what they're paying you now.
>>
>>17269629
Well you have to decide. Would you rather teach and earn less money but feel fulfilled, or would you rather earn more money but hate every day of your work? Also, despite the shit that Philosophy gets, it's pretty valued outside of specialised fields. It's also quite flexible, and you'll have the freedom to move laterally between jobs, not just vertically
>>
>>17269640
Okay, it's just a lot to think about, I mean it is my life we're talking about here. I value my happiness and freedom over $$$. I just wish school wasn't so damn expensive!
