Guy in mid 20's trying to get back in the game after a looong hiatus. I look healthy, can be funny around friends, and like to play sports casually.
I've been playing a pickup sport with this girl once every week. I find her very attractive but I can't tell how she sees me at all because she's so "nice" to everyone. She often laughs at my jokes but she's always smiling and positive that I can't make any meaningful deduction out of it. We hardly get to talk during our game since everyone's intensely running around and when the game is over she usually hurries back to her grad school studies unless we go get something to drink as a group. That's pretty much my only chance to talk to her, although we are friends on fb.
This is where I need your help. She seems like a reserved/quiet type and while I'm decent at making fun of myself to make people laugh, I've never quite figured out how to talk to a girl to signal that I'm interested, especially if the girl is as reserved as she is.
How should I break down the barrier and start signalling to her that i'm interested? Any tips on carrying the momentum of a conversation when the girl is not an active talker?

Just ask her if she wants to do something outside the of sport. Worst case she says no.
I just did it and it went terrible (she said yes) but yeah, so this week's game will be interesting but whatever. I'm glad I did it.

Okay going on the assumption that she has the potential to be interested in you.
Firstly, recognise that not everyone is an avid talker and may actually just appreciate listening. If you are doing a lot of talking, you need to figure out whether she's actively listening, eg eye contact, umming and arring etc or if shes just not interested. You should have an indication of which it is now.
Best way to get her to talk and show and interest is to straight out ask questions. Can even say it in a non stalkery way that you're interested in her (insert interest or general life shit here). It shows you're interested in her and what she has to say. Chat about her grad school shit, whatever.

here is a big problem with the modern dating field. a lot of guys like you think you have to wait until the girl shows some really erally really blunt sign that shes into you. you guys dont know what that sign would be. you are hopeful but attribute everything she does to just 'being nice'.
essentially, you guys act like girls. culturally, girls are the ones who live their regular lives, wiat for a man to make a move, then decide.
half of girls will know if the ylike oyu as soon as they meet you. the toher half wont even think about it until you actually make a move.
either way you still have to MAKE A MOVE. you cant be like 'WHY WONT SHE GIVE ME A SIGN' when you wont either.
just ask her out. casually. after the next game.
