Girl from Aus here. I have a part-time job at a German company and there are some German coworkers here. They seem chill and we are doing a lot of small talk.
I can speak German pretty well for an Aussie, mainly because I have a German online friend who helped me. I even visited him irl. Is it ok if I reveal to them how I learned German? Is mentioning having an online friene unprofessional? What if they ask how we met? (not that there are a lot of Germans in Aus)

Im confused Australia or Austria?

Just do what I do. Say you have a German friend. Don't mention that he's an online friend.

In that case just say you learned it in school or Rosetta stone and say you have a distant German fridnd who helled you with it too.

What if they ask how we have met though? It is not like there are a lot of Germans living abroad in Australia.

Just say he came on exchange or something, and that you continued talking over Skype. Not like they're ever going to meet him.

German here, generally people just have respect for you for learning the language, as we imagine it to be hard to learn. Don't worry to much about everything else, just be speaking German you have earned respect.
