How to know when you are pretending to be something you're not?
It's it gender related? Stop pretending
Is it anything else? That's just you being you (but you're probably stupid for thinking it)

>do you want to do this?
>congratulations, you are not pretending when you do it

No its not gender related. It is career related.

Then you can't go wrong.
Well you can, but only when you look back on it.
Take that leap, give it a try. If you don't try, you'll never know if it was the right choice.

If you aren't sure whether you're pretending, you are probably not pretending.
If you don't like your career and can't imagine ever liking your career, you are probably in the wrong line of work.
If you feel like you are faking it and are not yet qualified to be what your business card says you are, you are not alone. Keep pretending and eventually you become good at it, like nearly everyone else. (Or maybe you get fired, so see paragraph above. But faking it until you make it is the more likely outcome.)
