I'm in my first year of college and i'm still not entirely sure of what I want to do. My current major is biology, but i'm going to fail my chemistry class because I can't, nor have I ever been able to, into math or memorize the dozens of equations that are taught. I'm ashamed and extremely disappointed in myself. I've never completely failed a class before. Sometimes i'd pass with flying colors, and other times i'd just pass, but i've never outright failed before.

I want to know what some of you guys in school are studying, and what kind of jobs those of you who have graduated have. Just to get some ideas. I'm only proficient at writing, explaining, and describing things. Research papers and other things of that nature have never bothered me. I have few ideas in mind of what I want to do, but most of them have too little reward after graduation for the expenses i'm making now.

I know it's not the end of the world, and if I can't make it academically, i'm just going to work a blue-collar job, such as welding, which I already know how to do.

Just some ideas of real world jobs and what led to them is all I need to narrow my focus.

If your degree doesn't involve math it just isn't fucking worth anything in the job market. Even a shit tier MBA requires Calc 2 at most schools.

>memorizing equations
This is why you fail. You do not know how to learn.
You do not memorize equations. You understand them as true statements. You must know not just that one quantity equals another, but why this is so. There is always a reason and you will continue to fail until you learn to seek it.

How do people have a problem with memorization?

Just study for a respectable amount of time, and the answer should come to you during the test. I've never had a problem with tests so I don't understand.

Your brain holds millions of pieces of information, but it sorts them quite efficiently. You probably aren't being given an overwhelming amount of information weekly. Just take it week by week and study hard and effectively.

I know, that's why I forced myself into this major.

My professor told me something similar to that when I spoke to him about my situation, I've been trying to incorporate that point of view into my studying.

Dude, this is the class that made me start studying. I've put in the time. Hell, I somehow made friends to study with, but all 3 of them ended up dropping the class.

I'm fully aware of how much of a little bitch I sound right now.

Talk to one of the advisors in the Biology dept. They are sort of undergraduate coaches for those pursuing specific majors. Tell them what you think your shortcomings are, and get some perspective.

BTW, nothing wrong with blue collar jobs. If you like welding, consider becoming a specialist in the field, like an underwater welder. You go to work in the shipyards like NASSCO with a cert. like that, and you will make bank. It's the kind of career where you get sent all over the world and corporations groom you.

That happens to loads of people, don't worry. Most people I know switched majors at least once, even I did. Oddly I actually did graduate with a biology degree. The jobs aren't as plentiful as I thought they were, so now would be a good time to change if that's what you were in it for.

The classic advice is to just find out what it is you love and do that. You'll be happiest pursuing an education in something you love and/or are passionate about. You can take aptitude tests online too and hopefully get a better idea of what career options might work for you. Try to figure that out as soon as you can, if you do end up switching majors you don't want to waste time.

Though the realistic advice is that most people go to college so they can get a job. To some, it doesn't matter what they're interested in because the only goal is employment. Depending on your personality, you can teach yourself to love anything. Even math. Jobs right now are plentiful in computer science and engineering. But don't let that limit your options.

I have an appointment scheduled with him next week.

I took welding in high school so that I could secure a back up plan, and because the teacher was a friend of my grandfather. I ended up actually liking the work and what I was doing. I know of a school in Oklahoma that certifies people in all the welding professions, like underwater and pipe.

My goal is definitely employment.

The only positive note i'll be ending this school year on is that fact that I used this and last semester to knock out the final few basics I needed, so I'm not too deep into any field.
