How to break the ice during an awkward silence or when meeting someone for the first time?
If pic is related, then just don't think so much about the date. Just be happy about the fact, that you have one. Be open and not to shy. A date is meant to get know each other.
Stop thinking about the future an stuff you want to control. That's the fun part of a date, that you don't know what will happen.

Keep the conversation about the nearest context you two have in common (example: we're both in the same place, we're both students, we're both doing sports, we're both breathing oxygen right now)
Major con: unless you're smooth about it, people will sniff the awkwardness miles away.
It's convenient. That's the very reason why it's commonplace to talk about the weather when you don't have anything else to discuss - and why doing it is kinda sad. But fuck it, who cares.

What if you're in an elevator with someone? Do you talk about the elevator? That would sound very awkward.

yes. tell the how you once shat in the corner of an elevator. tell them statistics about deaths in elevators. and so on. hand them a list with elevator music.

Don't.
she's probably as nervous as you and it's ok to just admit that. A silence is only awkward if you fear it.
Just ask about her, relate things to yourself and ask about what she told you.
the best question ever is "why"
drop it whenever you like, it will allow her to talk about the deeper reason that drives her to act or think a certain way.
Something as mundane as taking the bus to work can suddenly expand to how she cares for the environment, which can expand to her view on what her "purpose in life" is. all by asking "why" twice.
(ok, you may have to say like "uhuh" or "really?" a few times in between to avoid sounding like a robot)
also just enjoy your time together, she's a person not a trophy!
