Today while using my PC the monitor suddenly went black and the fans turned on high, just like they normally do for a few seconds upon booting, bit now they stay on. It is completely unresponsive in this state and returns to it after unplugging and turning on again.

I have checked that the monitor is working and thus is seems it is obviously a hardware problem. Any idea what this is? I'm on the verge of bringing it to a repair shop, but if this is something obvious to you that I could replace myself, would love to hear about it.

Your CPU or motherboard is dead, probably. When you usually turn it on, do you get a beep? How about now?

open it up and clean it then try again
