I've been a contractor at a design firm for over 2 years, and I just received a "pre-employment consumer report" in the mail about myself.
Apparently someone at the company requested a background check for any criminal records on me, specifically, the CFO. It's a really small company, so I've talked to this guy before and he's super nice.
I guess I'm just paranoid, but I'm kinda nervous as to why they'd be checking up on me after two years. I'm on very friendly terms with the whole company (it's very small), so part of me wants to ask what's up, but I'm not sure if that's a bad idea.

Could be you guys are about to take on a major client that is security conscious (government/bank/etc.), could be he's doing his due diligence before considering you for a higher position, could be he was just bored.
Whatever the case, no reason to freak out about it as long as you're clean.
They're onto you. Quit and cut all ties.
Maybe you're in line for a promotion?
I don't think it's a bad idea. I think it's normal that you find it odd. I think you should be able to approach this person and ask them what they think about it. The important part is to communicate that you are curious, not angry. Ask if they make a background check on everybody or if it was a special case. If the later is true, ask if you can do anything to improve the situation and present yourself better. There is a possibility there was a misunderstanding.
It's tax season. They might have to run background checks for insurance purposes.
Or they're planning to promote you.
Or they think you did something.
