Can anyone recommend me an anime with the following criteria:

>80/90s to very early 00s
>no anime autist relationship issues where grown adults don't know how to act with the opposite sex
>no dragonball z length battles
>no perverted crap
>crap made for autists in mind

Here's a list of some anime I think are good:
Akira
Fist of the North Star
Vampire Hunter D
The Studio Ghlibi films
Ghost in the Shell (movie only)
Battle Angel Alita
Dirty Pair OVAs Streamline dubs
Paprika
Ninja Scrolls
Dominion Tank Police
and a few others I can't remember

I've been recommended Outlaw Star which was OK for 4 episodes till it turned to shit and Yu Yu Hakusho which only has a nice opening theme and not much else.

If you have to, you can ignore, the 80s/90s limit but it's there for a reason.

>no anime autist relationship issues where grown adults don't know how to act with the opposite sex

Ha... this is probably my most hated Japanese meme as well.

So your criteria is basically anything that was on Saturday Anime in the 90s?

Check out Robot Carnival, but be prepared to feel hardcore.
>>
Berserk.
>>
What would be a good anime with op's criteria for somebody who has never watched anime before?
>>
>>16827593
Most of the ones I listed in the OP.

>>16827578
>So your criteria is basically anything that was on Saturday Anime in the 90s?

Not really, the ones I listed were on the VHS Manga Entertainment tapes.

But I'll check out Robot Carnival.

>Saturday Anime

I'm guessing that was an american thing? I think we had shit shown in Channel 4 at like 2 in the morning, in the 90s.
>>
>>16827621

Yeah

Every Saturday morning starting at 6 am the Sci Fi channel would show like three anime movies from the 80s and 90s. It is really what put the channel on the map and the success made them change their business from informative documentaries to straight entertainment.
>>
>>16827632
6am? What shit did they show since that seems kinda early for the violent ones? I'm guessing not things like Fist of the North Star?
>>
>>16827656

They showed everything in OP's list but censored the sex, nudity and more extreme violence with blurs or just completely cutting it out and jumping to the next scene.

Contrary to what you may have heard, the US has gotten more conservative when it comes to sex and violence since the 90s in regard to TV. They could get away with it back then.

Besides, if you really want to show some shit then now you have the internet mediums so it doesn't matter.
>>
>>16827666

Oh, minus ninja scroll and D. I don't think they ever showed that.

The first time I ever saw Akira was the edited version on Saturday Anime though. I'm sure if you googled around you could find a list of everything they aired if you cared enough.
>>
>>16827666

Oh and also a comedian named Sandra Bernhardt used to host this late night show on that featured a showing of a soft core porn movie that had all the nudity blurred. I used to stroke it furiously to that show, don't remember which network it was on.

Basically, the cable channels before they got popular used to do all kinds of stuff. Since it was during what people considered to be off-time for viewers the FCC didn't care, or I guess maybe they were unaware but I don't see how that is possible.

People just complain about degeneracy now because of the internet and they actually have to be parents rather than having the government babysit their kids for them.

Good God I have never seen such a shitty series.

You've got to be trolling because Elfen is centered around three of the items OP says he can't stand:

>no perverted crap
>crap made for autists in mind

Seriously, drop anything you are doing, watch this! It's beautiful! It will change you opinion on anime, on animation, on films, it's amazing!

It's 3 short stories with unique animation and tone each and each one is great but my favourite is Magnetic Rose. Watch it!

We're talking about Evangelion, right?

I like the Gundam series. Unicorn that came out a year or so ago is by far my favorite, followed by 00 then Wing. I have a weird relationship with my dad so Unicorn really made me feel.

The stories aren't that great but I love all the machine designs and such.
>>
>>16827963
>We're talking about Evangelion, right?

Yep, same guy who made Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, which was like a pedo's take on a Studio Ghilbi film.
>>
>>16827973

Yeah... fuck Evangelion.

After years of resisting it I watched the old series and all the new movies last year and was mad as fuck. I want that ~17 hours of my life back.
>>
>>16827543
How can you be a retro anime elitist and not have Evangelion/Gunbuster in that list. I guess Eva's relationships are pretty autismal.
Tekkaman Blade is pretty fucking great, but the first episodes are really shittily animated and it sometimes feels its lenght (50 episodes) and there are THREEEE recap episodes towards the end but overall it's one of my favorites.
>>
Cowboy Bebop, I'm surprised it hasnt already been said. The characters are well developed and you learn more about them and get a better understanding of what defines them the more the series develops. I've watched it about 4-5 times over now and every time I watched it there was something new I'd pick up.
>>
>>16828001

Probably because it is something everyone has seen.
>>
>>16828001

I have seen the series version, it sucked. I don't want to watch an anime where they infodump with static animation and goofy 'cutesy' characters that exist in a world that's at odd with their design.
>>
>>16827543

I highly recommend Geneshaft.

it was a 13 episode anime that aired on anime-unleashed. it was kind of like a more realistic serious version of Gundam. by more realistic and serious, i mean the robot was flawed, it didn't have flashy designer armor, etc.

it takes place in a future where all of humanity is genetically advanced, but one girl has whats called a 'white gene' which is pretty much making her the equivelent of a human from the early 2000s (us) while everyone else is sorta 'programmed' to be superior in some way.

there is a LITTLE male-female autism with the main character, but its EXTREMELY justified by the fact that in this future romance doesn't exist. the two characters also have a bit of a sad connection in their past justifying the lead females anger at her male captain who she is obviously also in love with.

i cant recommend this anime enough, I'm about to re watch it myself. its one of the few examples of perfect sound story telling in television. whiel there are some japanese quirks, you could watch it and feel like it was written in english first, as opposed to translated.

it also used the 'ancient aliens' theory in the plot almost a decade before it became mainstream with the documentary series.

they apparently do have it on hulu:
http://www.hulu.com/geneshaft
>>
>>16828035

I fucking love 00 but the first season is way too stretched out. Also, the movie was kind of lame despite the awesome combat scenes.

I'd have a hard time deciding between Unicorn and 00.

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuiokuhen

the second season was a pretty big improvement in that regard imo. I really disliked the first season but liked the second one a lot.

Anyway OP I think you should check out Street Fighter 2: V, it feels like they took a hong kong kung fu movie and turned it into a series.

>>
>>16828043
>it also used the 'ancient aliens' theory in the plot almost a decade before it became mainstream with the documentary series.
The show was capitalizing on an already existing cult of stupid people who already read Chariot of the Gods.

>>
>>16828001
came here to suggest Cowboy Bebop.

This next suggestion probably doesn't fit what OP is looking for, but it's a fantastic series and well worth watching: Tatami Galaxy.

There's a bit of autism (surprise surprise, it's about an awkward kid finding love), but as the series unfolds, it flips a lot of shit on its head.
>>
>>16828088

considering no one talked about it as an actual theory until the ancient aliens doc, id say no. it wasn't some hidden away niche, but it wasn't like prometheus where everyone woudl watch it and say 'dude this is just ancient aliens'.

Searching up on google, apparently it was made into a live-action film in 2002 though it was 'boring'.

im not arguing about whether or not its a theory. but you can bring up 'ancient aliens' and literally everyone knows what ur talking abotu.

bring it up in 2001 and the concept of itself is something people rarely heard of outside of peopel who actually wached things like geneshaft or stargate or what have you.

Berserk. Be aware that there are some newer versions of the show made into a movie with that weird 3d-faux anime shit. Even worse, that's the only one that's going to delve deeper into the manga.

it is actually. i watched the first 10 episodes wiht a qt3.14 asian and it was nice, but its about as shounen as it gets. it focuses on like two 11 year olds who look like 2 6 years old, and then some third eleven year old i think? and then some really old guy who follows these kids around like a pedophile. they fight monsters i think, but i never got to the part hwere they actually hunt shit, they were still trying to get their license like 10 episodes in.

Stargazer is two down and six over on the chart, "MSG SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer."

My opinion if for whatever reason you can only watch one would be Unicorn. I love Stargazer but you really do have to watch 50 episodes of the mediocre Gundam SEED in order to understand and appreciate it. I also love 00 but it takes like twelve episodes to set everything up and get going so it would probably just be frustrating to someone new to the series.

It is shite, one-dimensional characters, Shinji's father in particular who we almost literally see in one pose.

I liked the 1st movie and the 1st movie only.

The series is boring cos it spends a whole chunk of time for exposition through info dumps; characters literally standing frozen while talking for long periods of time.

One dimensional? They have a complexity in the original series which I am hard pressed to find in other media, let alone anime.

Confirmed for troll.

Not at a troll at all. The characters in the show are all great examples of humans with problems with personal relationships and struggle with their own self-image and self-worth.

Please stop trolling.

You genuinely think I am going to watch a 'character analysis' by some weeb?
>>
>>16828804
Please stop being a pleb. I'm seriously not trolling. It's just a shame that you don't appreciate what Eva does.
>>
>>16828808
Then you are confirmed for pleb, if you genuinely believe that

>They have a complexity in the original series which I am hard pressed to find in other media, let alone anime.

But I understand why this piece of shit resonates with autists.
>>
well if you haven't seen Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, do so.
>>
>>16828807
Up to you if you want to ignore my example of the character depth in the show.
>>
>>16828825
Will do.
>>
>>16828797
>The characters in the show are all great examples of humans with problems with personal relationships and struggle with their own self-image and self-worth.

You realize that Dostoevsky was able to do that with just over a 100 pages? And it laid the groundwork for the classic Taxi Driver which covers the same ground in just under 2 hours?

Something that that heap of cack wasn't able to over a series?
>>
OP watch K-ON!, Nichijou, the *gatari series, Sidonia, Madoka, Jormungand, Ore Monogatari, BACCANO, Hyouka, Durarara!!, K, and Gin no Saji.

If you don't like any of those titles, you're a faggot and should fuck off 4chan.
>>
>>16828865
I only recognise K-ON and that's only from avatars, the rest I assume is the same sort of crap.

Well, I guess this is as much relevant advice as I can get from /adv/.

I'll go check the ones on my list starting with Memories.

I prefer Turgenev

What's the matter?

Where did the 2d character touch you?
>>
>>16829119
monogatari and madoka are shit and urobutcher is the banksy of anime
>>
>>16829099
Paranio Agent comes under satoshi kun and I've watched tekkonkinkreet, not quite sure it was. Devilman OVA maybe, I remember it being in the trailers and it gives same vibes as Guyver.

The rest look a bit suspect, if you don't mind me saying.
>>
>>16829197
hmm in what way

i can see why kemonozume would be offputting (style could be considered ugly and too unconventional), people consider lain and monster to be boring, etc
>>
>>16828495
In his defense, the Berserk anime was pretty bad, and that's coming from a diehard fan. I would only suggest the manga.
>>
>>16829344
agreed, the movie adaptations of the golden age arc are much better than the anime but whether the cg is palatable or not is debatable.

also if op enjoyed the souls series he would probably be able to appreciate berserk, which was a big influence

Couldn-t find somebody that already suggested it. Which fucking pisses me off really.

Wings of Honneamise or Royal Space Force OP.

But its only for people with really high taste in cartoons, so I doubt you-ll like it.
>>
>>16829224
It's more the grouping of lain and monster together that makes me think it is suspect. I've seen lain in the same breath as other 2deep4u anime.

>Kemonozume
>"beast claw" 2006
Eh...

>Mind game
Actually LOOKS interesting, not sure if it actually is. Same art style as tekko. Will have a look.

>yokohama
> "This is light years beyond almost all the manga being translated and published in the US."
I remember other crappy anime getting rave reviews like 'Welcome to the NHK'.
So forgive me if I'm sceptical of this one.

>dennou coil
> awarded an Excellence Prize along withTengen Toppa Gurren Lagannby a jury at the 2007
Way past the early 00 criteria and Gurren Lagann sucked.
>>
>>16829368
>only for people with really high taste in cartoons

Damn.
>>
>>16829410
im not normally into "romance" at all but kemonozume was bizarre enough (the animation and colors, was directed by masaaki yuasa who worked on mindgame) for me to like it. the type of strange that yuasa's good at, not the forced wackiness you'll see in the latest slice of life piece of harem shit.
not trying to shill or anything i'm just a pretentious artfag

lain and ykk are there mostly because of the atmosphere and art, which i found comforting
>>
>>16829517
Might look into it after finishing my list. I don't mind romance either but this is anime we're talking about where saying the word kiss makes characters blush like a bride. I'll take your word for it that it's not like one of those harem trash.

Lain I'm definitely not going to touch.
>>
>>16829458

Damm right anon.

Few people will like it, because of their horrible shit taste.

Gungrave
Samurai Champloo
Gun x Sword
Blue Gender
Black Lagoon
Giant Robo the OVA
Big O (goes full Eva towards the end though)
Gundam OVAS (0083, 0080, 08th MS Team)

I liked Escaflowne but maybe you wouldn't, even though I have similar standards as you.
>>
I'm going to HEAVILY agree with everyone in this thread who said Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and strongly insist that you follow that advice as soon as possible.

It is the best animated series I have ever seen in my entire life, a true gem of the medium.
>>
>>16829938
>Black Lagoon

Aside from being shit, poorly animated and just generally tryhard, it also fails OPs

>no autist anime relationship issues between adults

really badly.
>>
One last request, what anime films and series had double dubs?

I know Akira had a streamline and a pioneer dub (which sucked).
>>
Has anyone recommended psycho-pass yet?

It's really quite good, the main protagonist is a young girl fresh out of the police academy, but there's little to none of the cringey autistic stuff - just plenty of minority report meets matrix goodness.
>>
Watched Magnetic Rose which was pretty good, but kind of cliche.

>>16831767
I remember psycho-pass being lumped in with other 2deep4u anime.
