Generally speaking, the opinion of the medical community is that SRS, although a very imperfect procedure, has a positive impact on the mental health of most trans people who undergo it. It is not right for everybody, which is why not all trans people elect to undergo it, and why most trans people receive a fair amount of counseling beforehand to manage their expectations and make sure it's what they really want.
Yes, there are some people who fail to receive that counseling and undergo hormone therapy / sex-reassignment surgery frivolously. They are not representative.
