In addition to above anons: crappy camera, use of unflattering dead-on camera angle and center placement with nothing else going on in the background, unflattering lighting, messy hair, beard, and clothes.
There's a million and a half youtube tutorials on how to take and pose for a proper self-portrait/profile pic/selfie that doesn't look terrible.
Take the pic outside, but not backlit by the sun nor in direct sunkight.
Rotate your body 45 degrees but face forward.
Think of a fond memory ala Harry Potter facing a boggart. Smile naturally.
Clench your jaw .
