I live in a rural area and my only dream is to move to LA. I keep hearing that it costs 1k a month just to live in a ghetto but I think people are exegerrating. For the time being I don't really care about TV and internet i just want a room and a job. I wouldn't mind a place slightly run down but to be literally like in the culdasac of Compton might be a bit much. What do I do? I found nice looking rooms on craigslist for 600-800/mo

Rent in the 'ghetto' is often higher than safer areas. In L.A. you may be able to find low rents in nice areas that are inconveniently located, such as San Pedro or Topanga.

Cost of living is no exaggeration. Been there done that. Was paying as much for rent just just a furnished room in one city as an entire house payment would have cost in another. You'll be moving to the ghetto and won't survive for very long. The new arrivals with no street-smarts are always short-lived in L.A. Cost of living is high. Landlords can fuck you over by lowering the cost of rent, then raise it while you live there. Most leases say "Rent can change at any time."
The cheapest apartment in my area (a suburb about 20 mins from LA) is 750 for a studio apartment. That area is not violent ghetto, but it's mainly a little crowded, and all the "gangsters" are generally teenagers that just want to do graffiti and fight rival krews on occasion.

By the way, a 1br in San Pedro is $950 a month. Given that the usual rule is not to spend more that 1/3 of your income on rent, you only need to earn $34,200 a year or $17.10 an hour. Of course, the apt and area will resemble Dan's apt in Dan Vs.

L.A. In the hood is not all it's cracked up to be. I have friends that love out there and her son was hit in the head with a hammer for his bike on the corner of their block. He had a scull fracture from this at the time he was was about 14 years old.. I like in NYC I kinda know hoods.. But when I lived in the hood in Florida I would get scared going in certain areas or by certain situations. It's a not smart thing to do without street smarts. Like the other day I saw a kid get his kicked in the train station in front of a cop. The cop just stood there.
If you're dead set on moving to L.A. You'll be better off in safer areas with roommates. And make sure you have enough money saved up to float you for a while until you find a job, any job. And any job is better than no job..
