Why does everyone say that being a teacher is stressful? Surely it is less stressful than being a nurse/surgeon/adjunct professor?

It depends what age group you teach. K-8th grade is basically an overpaid glorified babysitter.
>>

Because, at least in the US, a lot of teachers have seen their jobs completely transformed thanks to No Child Left Behind, Common Core and creased standardized testing. I read many articles where teachers have complained that their job is no longer about helping kids, but about catering to bureaucracy. Kind of soul sucking.

Also, neglectful parents and delusional helicopter parents.

I thought teachers were underpaid..
>>

because theyre too focused on socialising instead of marking papers. So its stressful when they have to stay up late to mark papers cause theyre out partying all night. Also kids a dicks sometimes i guess

>>16447004
Relative to what they do and how little they work. The pay is actually pretty decent in most places.

It depends on many factors like other jobs - work conditions, co-workers. You also have the parents and kids. My wife taught for years. It wore on her a bit but she was quite dedicated to her job and put a good amount of effort into it (you don't have to in many instances).

You'll always hear teachers whine how they deserve more when in reality, K-5 is really just babysitting. Other than creative projects, and rudimentary teaching topics. I have two friends who are teachers, they got an online degree at a mickey mouse online school which is not even accredited, one of them has a pretty bad speech impediment and his only saving grace is that he is good with kids.

I'm not a teacher but come on, when was the last time you had to bring work home with you? Teachers have to almost every night, it's like they never get to punch out.

How hard can it be? They teach the same subjects year after year, they've taken the subjects themselves, it's really just memory. If teachers didn't want to be bored teaching they shouldn't teach.

Depending on what you teach grading papers can be a breeze. What are multiple choice tests and single answer questions. Hell, you can do a lot of it during class while your students are busy. Also what are scantrons for tests.

If you're an English teacher or something that requires more articulate answers and have to read papers. You probably got an that English degree because you like writing or enjoy the subject.

>it's not like the small amount of "work" they have is hard either
>teachers have summers off
>get paid vacations
>get holidays off

From what I've heard, teachers in Anglophone countries only grade exams/tests and almost never homework

For the record, the requirements to get a teaching license vary greatly from state to state. Minnesota would kick out an applicant from a non-accredited school faster than you can say "DeVry".

You live in the Deep South don't you?
>>
>>16447004
They get paid for a whole year for 9 months of work. Lucky bastards.
>>
>>16447075
>You live in the Deep South don't you?

No. West Coast, US. In fairness, there are a lot of mexicans where they teach. It is truly pathetic what is happening in the school system.

>>16447075
>implying the south is retarded rednecks

This
If you're single and love pouring emotional/physical/financial resources into 20 kids do it.
>>16447037
If the kids have no mental issues, have a safe and nurturing home life and the parents are involved then sure it's easy. Lots of kids don't have that and working to make sure they catch up (assuming you care at all) is tedious.

Stress ÷ years spent getting the degrees
>>
>>16447102
Well, it is.

Look at Texas, only 80% of kids graduate high school. That's atrocious
>>
>>16447102
Sadly, I was just stating the facts: http://www.aecf.org/m/databook/aecf-2014kidscountdatabook-embargoed-2014.pdf

Minnesota: 5th in the nation
Bottom 10: 8 Deep South states + California and Nevada

Well, teachers are basically employees of the state they work in.

It becomes pretty difficult in the US, especially in Southern states, where the government forces you teach things like creationism in science class.

I don't think the stress really comes from the job itself (although I'm sure a portion of it does), but it's more what you are legally required to do. Teaching has become stressful because of the rigorous standardized testing focus.

Teachers want to teach, but instead are trying to make students memorize meaningless crap, at the expense of real things like science, art, music, languages, and so on.

If you guys had even a rudimentary understanding of psychology, you would know how vulnerable kids are at those ages. A bad teacher can spoil their interest in learning early on. If anything, high school teachers are glorified babysitters.
>>
>>16446976
I don't know.Maybe because students these days are shit?
>>
Because they work 12 hour days, 8 of which are with little fucking assholes, douchebag parents, shitty administration and retarded coworkers.
>>
>>16447037
Then your retard friends are the fucking problem with todays schools
>>
>>16447002
Nah I substituted for a while and k-6 is awful. They are fragile little things that you can't teach anything or parents get angry and make complaints. Middle and high school are alright, but you have to deal with a lot of bullshit and drama, and the occasional threat against you
>>
If you're a high school teacher you have to deal with smartasses all day, making projects for kids, making tests, grading stuff on time, doing work during school and at home, then you don't make enough money so you have to get another job either at a tutoring center or at a community college teaching as well, and the kids always talk shit about you and try to get you in trouble because you have them a bad grade since they don't try and their only excuse is "the teacher sucks"
>>
>>16446976
well really every job is stressful
