Pity, mostly. I suspect I would feel like a failure as a parent.

But it is a parent's duty to take care of their children, or, when that isn't possible, to see that they are taken care of. And that is what I would do: demand whatever level of psychiatric care it takes to get them to a better place. If that means some time spent in inpatient care, so be it.

And if it turns out that they HAVE acted on this, then I would like to think I would have the strength to turn them in. With tears in my eyes, yes, because I know what happens to people like that in prison: I would likely be sending him to his death, and a death much nastier than any court could order. But again, parental duty. I would stand with him to the end, but standing with him does not mean blanket absolution.
