Would a company ever lie to you about the reason you were fired for? I was told 'financial difficulties', kinda hard believing it since they hired 5 new employees in the last 3 months.
If your boss is a pussy, he'll say something like that to avoid a confrontation.
It's to your advantage, really: "laid off" looks better than "fired."

I've lied to people about why they've been let go plenty of times, probably more often than not. Thing is, wearing a tie and getting paid more doesn't change the fact that I'm a regular person the same as you. It's a lot less stressful to come up with a line about downsizing or restructuring than it is to turn round to a guy who you know full well uses the money you give him every friday to support his wife and kids and say "look mate, your work is too slow and I'm not going to get my bonus unless we finish on time, so get your tools and fuck off".

I was assigned minimal work in the past 2-3 months, so I was browsing the web for 4+ hours a day because there was nothing to do. I took that up with my manager a few times.
On the one hand it could be because of financial difficulties, on the other they could have seen me as not working; although never got a single remark or disciplined about it.

Cause you're not a team player, should've asked if people needed help.

I was employed there for 3+ years.
