Speaking from experience, I've found that Fetlife is best when you are already 'initiated'. You can use it to find munches, and research the kinks you're actually into. The same can kind of be said with munches. I tried going to a few back in college (I'm in Boston). I don't know what it is about male switches that make dommes go nuts, but they do. They are almost more sought after than 'plain' male subs, depending on the domme. I've always guessed that it is that switches are rarer than subs, and men who bottom are rarer than men who top. That, and I think dommes fantasize about 'needing to break' a switch into being a bottom, or topping a switch, while the switch tops someone else ("You're going to fuck them, like this").
Its nice to feel wanted - especially since men do all the chasing in vanilla dating - just make sure it is by someone whom you like first. I mean keep that you're a sub or switch to yourself. If you don't say anything one way or another, most will guess that you're a top/dom. If asked directly, just respond with something along the lines of 'I would rather not say' or 'I am just curious right now'.
If anyone really presses you for a specific answer, you can safely assume two things:
1) They're a top
2) They're a shitty top (lack of boundary respect) and are to be avoided even outside of the bedroom
There are exceptions, of course. I know a couple bottoms that are too curious for their own good - and can be pushy about it - but still. Being serious, its kind of tricky giving too-specific of advice. Every munch, and every community is going to be different - and so are the way people approach different social situations.
I prefer to sit off to the side and observe people whenever I am seeing a group of people for the first time. I interact and I am friendly if I am approached, but I prefer to people watch at first. It lets me figure out who is considerate, who is self-absorbed, who is with whom, and if there are any obvious people to avoid interacting with if at all possible. I do this, whether it is a kink event or not.
But not everyone is like this. My current GF prefers to just dive right in. She is the kind of person who can make friends with someone in the checkout line at the grocery store. Personally, I think this gets her into trouble sometimes - especially when you look at her dating history - but it does help her make more friends in general.
So behave in a way that makes you comfortable, but still lets you be aware of how those around you are behaving towards one another.
