The very VERY first thing I think is safe to say all people would do would be to prove that the tiny they are seeing is real. I know, it's a completely alien way of assigning empathy that borders on doublethink. It's arguably more terrifying than simple cruelty because it's so different from human expectations.
This has been touched on in stories/comics, too.
IIRC in Silver Scales, Remus meets a bunch of different predators, and he's not happy they eat people, but he feels he understands on some level their thought process of "these little people aren't really people" combined with "it is the natural order of the jungle for the strong to consume the weak".
Then he meets Milly and finds out she still eats the people that she's so incredibly nice to he's like "seriously what the fuck, this shit has to stop".
