That movie has a real sad ending. Not terribly happy they decided to change the rules that had been established in early movies, but still way better than the second one. Imo, they really shouldn't have tried to make it into a kid-friendly horror/comedy, or distance themselves from the punk influences in the RotLD.

And yeah, it does deviate a lot from RotLD so much that it might as well have been a completely different franchise; the thing that always made RotLD engaging was that Zombies were a real threat, especially nowadays when zombies are nothing but cannon fodder played for comedy. I at least like that 3 had a unique story to tell. In most zombie movies a character's development ends as soon as they become a zombie, so seeing one where their story continues into what being a zombie actually entails is really interesting.
Plus, let's face it, there's something very thrilling in an Anime-esqe way about having a badass waifu to fight off monsters for you. She's like Lum rolled in broken glass.
