So in case they flake on the final payment you still get some money. But it gives them the reassurance that you will work on it. Is it worth it? Or should I just charge upfront like you said? When I've commissioned pieces it's gone like this. I send them my request. They accept. They ask for references, I send. When it is time for them to work on my comm, they send me a very low detail sketch, pretty much a zero detail outline of the picture, where I can suggest like "bigger boobs" or "make her facing this way". They edit the sketch to my liking, and if I approve, then they charge me. Once I pay, they start to actually flesh out the art, color, all that. So you give them assurance that their piece is being worked on as well as a rough sketch of what it will look like, and they then cannot back out of payment.

Best advice if you dont have a big fanbase on your gallery is to look for the commissioners, go to communities of things you like to draw and start showing your stuff, after a while once you become a god there you will eventually get asked if you take commissions.
