In the original Marvel comics, the only females to show up were a self-defense AI on the Ark which had no physical form (UK only) and Arcee who appeared in an adaptation of the movie and a couple UK backups. Meanwhile, in an arc focused on the Pretenders this lack of mate pairing was explored. And IDW's main universe was running at the same time as one based on the movies was which had various females appear along with Animated airing on TV. Not a retcon since it only is about the universe it is set in, and not the other ones published. If a series wasn't allowed to expore different ideas, might as well claim Animated retconned franchise history by not having Prime as the highest rank or having the Allspark be the source of life for them.

We have had Transformers fiction where they were written as "weird alien robots" before. It was unrelatable and poorly received.

It was Marvel UK, not IDW. Simon Furman had a big boner for the "alien robots" concept, and hated the notion of them having genders. In Marvel UK Arcee was literally created to appease http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Feminist_mob. That said, Furman was a genuinely good writer for the series, and was very popular.
When IDW rebooted, they hired Simon Furman because of his relationship with the series, where he wrote "crazy trannie Arcee," and did a big thing about how she was a male bot who got a forced sex change to introduce gender to Transformers. It was pretty stupid, because females had been shown before.
It wasn't until Windblade, and a whole bunch of new female Transformer toys from Hasbro, that they started putting females in a bunch more. They kind of shrugged the whole thing off (and made Furman mad.)
I haven't read it since Dark Cybertron but it looks like they're saying it was some spark thing, and that there were always female Transformers. Although now it looks like they're going in the opposite direction to pander to the "ungendered robot" crowd ("Nautica was also given a "estriol-positive" spark-type, implying that Transformer gender went spark-deep—but James Roberts asked this to be edited to ferrum-positive in the trade paperback, after deciding it was "potentially (if unintentionally) offensive" to imply gender was biological.")
It's a shame because James Roberts is a legitimately good writer, but he's a little too.... European in some things.
