It's also a rabbit hole of uncertainty. Unless you have a very stringent system, you can keep tweaking the image for days.
When you have a lot of fans wanting new content, sketches are probably the most time efficient way of going.

The only shortcut I know is to take life drawing classes. I don't know why, but 2-3 hours life drawing gives the the anatomical confidence of about a month of trying to wing it.

Shading is only time consuming when you're inexperienced. Much like drawing in general. Mileage and experience increases your speed. Also, celshading is a very basic and simple rendering method.
It's not a matter of LM not being able to do it. It's definitely possible to find the time to learn how to render well. He's just lazy and his fans don't require it of him.
With the way he sketches, almost all of his work comes off as too samey. Half the time you can barely tell who the character is suppose to be because his body types are so homogeneous with not much variation. His faces also aren't very expressive and come off pretty stiff and dull. LM is one of those artists who I liked when I first discovered their work, but as time went on I got extremely tired and uninterested in it. There's no real progression or growth seen in his work. It just comes off as stagnant as hell. He doesn't deserve his own thread tbh.

That's because you're standards are extremely low. Dull poses, dull expressions, and no real element of interesting/engaging compositions in all of his works. All you'd have to do is read an b&w h-manga to see why legoman's art is incredibly boring for what it is. There is no sense of energy in his work. The internet is loaded with 1 trick pony artists but the reason so many people take issue with legoman is because his work feels so dead in comparison those other artists even though they are all 1 trick ponies.

You don't need to be drawing h-manga to take tips from them and the compositions used. The same applies in the context of pin-ups. You can still use those poses for pin-ups. There is no real excuse for why Legoman's work is so lifeless and boring outside of the fact that Legoman is lazy, and his fans don't have any real standards so he's not forced to step up his game.

that comparison actually supports the perspective that he is below the level of someone who has mastered both. my point was that I enjoy his work because it demonstrates good visual-spatial-anatomical understanding, and if I had to choose from the two sub-par extremes of naked sketch-like artistic competence vs. colorful photoshop glitz lacking underlying structure, I would pick the former. I don't even care about the characters because I don't know 80% of them.
your bone is that you find his compositions lifeless and boring, dull poses and expressions. cleaning these sketches up and adding color won't really change that, and asking for something different is like asking Elvgren to paint a face other than his formulaic smiling or 'surprised with pursed lips' expression. if I shared the sentiment that this work is shit I would simply ignore it and move on like most do with artists who don't tickle their fancy.

He used to do shading, you can see it a couple years back on tumblr when he used to work with grey backgrounds. But a lot of the images would often come out looking off, so he nixed it in favor of non-shading.
On his Patreon, he does do some shading and coloring pieces a few times each month, but he never cleans them up.

Legoman is a stagnant intermediate artist at best. The people you're referring to on deviant art are stagnant beginners, literally the bottom of the barrel on deviantart. They aren't even intermediate level yet. It's dumb to compare him to those people because of that very reason. There is no point in doing that. That's like me comparing Legoman to Loish or Artgerm even though LM is only intermediate while Loish and Artgerm are both at advanced pro level and don't even need to resort to drawing smut to make money. Smut in itself is a gimmick most often used to help amateur intermediate artists sell their work easier anyway. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but that's the truth of the matter.
