He has demonstrated he could animate people just fine. There was nothing wrong with the movement of the characters. The only limiting factor here is the amount of time and effort it takes to actually put all that detail in. Of course he might not be a skilled enough artist to do more detailed drawings but I find that quite unlikely given the convincing nature of the water effects and the rock smashes.
