If you put Toriyama's work over the years side to side, the transition is very gradual.
And at least in my opinion, it gets better than his late DB art before starting to change into what it currently is.
Even during DB his artwork got more complex, then simpler again, with less details and more angular art. After DB ended it started getting more detailed and he moved away from the rougher edges towards more rounded character designs, and eventually he went back to simplifying stuff. But at this point he reached something completely different from his mid to late DB days, so comparing the two in a vacuum is jarring.
