Well, the main theme of the series is your talent doesn't define you. Hope's Peak Academy collected students with talents in order to raise them into the future hope of Japan or mankind. So if you're a talent you're basically forced to live a life of the Ultimate. This most likely an allusion to Japanese social upbringings and how people from those upbringings can never escape their social classes because their place in the world has already been defined since their birth. Of course the first game at the end proves that the Ultimates can be who they want to be byintroducing Junko who went from a gyaru to the Ultimate Despair and Naegi who became the Ultimate Hope.

Serious question, because this isn't the first time I've seen this but how so? I do acknowledge that DR immediately attracts the tumblr crowd by various reasons. For one, all characters have a special "quirky" personality that makes them easy to get attatched to and the setting itself is ANIME as fuck.
However DR itself never striked me as tumblr, it's a game where people get killed by (sometimes) retarded reasons, there's molestation (DR:AE), there's quite a lot of fanservice,etc.
