It's just some smudges. The only reason why that berserk image looks "decent" is because berserk is drawn in a semi-grayscale style and just armor, meaning the armor could have almost any color and it would look good

It's not about complexity. It's about the training data set. It was trained with actual photographs of nature and people, and those don't really correlate with manga art at all in terms of what coloration cues the algorithm has learned with its training set.
If you grayscale a screenshot from a Shinkai film it might work okay.

Here's the elephant in the room.
Grey/black in manga does not actually adhere to the 'grey' tones that a greyscale program or a colorblind person would see. The artists pick the shades.
Remember every time you were caught out by a green haired bitch when you pictured it brown? That's why. The program can't work for manga because manga artists can't shade correctly.

It actually seems to do worse with modern photos. I guess the dynamic range is too great.
This shit doesn't work with manga because it compares the black and white images with a database of real life colored images, then it checks the shapes and if they are similar the algorithm applies it to the black and white image.
Most of the time the algorithm doesn't know what to do and simply applies that horrid brown/gold tint to the image, that is the default value set by the fag who wrote this algorithm.

The reason it's so terrible for your anime and manga images is because it was trained using photographs and paintings.
Of course if you try to apply a machine learning algorithm trained using images with heavy gradients, it would perform poorly on images with almost no gradients.
My recommendation: Copy their algorithm, but train it using anime. Record every keyframe. Desaturate using level ramps. Every color above a certain brightness threshold is perceived as white. Every color below that threshold is perceived as a shade of gray (or black)
You will need THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of examples. This is why you need anime. Pipe your enormous anime collections through a filter that extracts keyframes. Then you will have an enormous amount of data to work with.

It feels pretty appropriate with the big MARS double-page spreads. Soft, warm yellow over the top of everything is pretty much how the official coloured stuff looks.
I think most of them are okay, if they made something similar for drawn pictures it would be awesome. Black and white manga doesn't work at all for me when reading on a computer monitor, but in its original medium it's okay, but I never read it like that.
