Do animation studios have a whole season of an anime finished before episode 1 airs? Or do they animate new episodes every week?
>>
No way, they usually finish an episode days before it airs.

They usually have 3-4 eps finished before the season starts, but more often than not the production schedule starts to slip and that's when you get all the QUALITY halfway through the series

Just watch Shirobako

normally japanese animes are animated on live while being broadcasted
thats why theyre so superior to their western counterpart

Seiji Mizushima, director of Concrete Revolutio, on how long it takes to create an anime show.
>It really depends; however, if I produce from the scenario, it takes around 6 months for the 1st episode.
>(It doesn’t mean making the 2nd episode takes additional 6 months. Each following episode takes 1 week.)
It all depends on how soon the anime must be finished. Keep in mind that the production committees have to buy the airing time at the TV stations for their late-night niche anime otaku shows.

Time management is key in the anime industry.

>6 months for the first episode and Lucky Star still happened
>>

Lucky Star was an adaptation, also they decided that giving absolute creative freedom to a rookie director was a good idea

They did the same thing with K-ON and it turned out to be the best thing ever. They really liked taking chances back then.
>>
wasn't trigger working on the last couple episodes of kill la kill the day before they aired?
>>
Don't worry soon all anime will take the Netflix Model and will be made before it's aired and thus have consistent high budget quality.

That's because Imaishi can't stick to a storyboard and production schedule to save his life.

Hell they even made fun of it as soon as ep 4
