All hope was lost when they fell down the stairs and woke up 30 minutes later in the school infirmary, when being unconscious for more than 2 minutes points towards heavy injuries. They'd be waking up in an ambulance, not a fucking infirmary.

The show is almost schizophrenic in its portrayal of the main character. He's a mature man when it needs him to look down on the inexperience of high school students, then he's a bumbling moron 5 seconds later when it needs to make a joke about how unprepared he is to deal with the "harsh realities" of high school life.
It was far too inconsistent and wishy washy, and therefore lacking in character and or connection.

Other shows and stories successfully pull it off without making you feel like the main character has no personality. There's no reason this one couldn't do it too, other than the writing just isn't up to par.

If what you're saying is that the main character has no personality, then that's something I disagree with. The humor lies in how he often acts very mature but gets humiliated because he's being cocky and smug. You can be mature in dealing with interpersonal issues yet cocky when it comes to shit like sports and exams. I don't see how that there's necessarily any inconsistency there and I certainly don't see how having that dichotomy would discount the other character traits he has shown throughout the series such as being empathetic, selfless and compassionate.
