After considering the ending seriously and the buildup to that ending, I came to the conclusion that its actually a very realistic story.
Instead of having characters that overcome their problems, challenge their fears, and move on with their lives in brighter happier satisfied way that most series end with, the series ends on the note of mediocrity and status quo.
The events of the series were mostly galvanized by Yoshio and Natsu putting the carrot of the shining city in front of Machi, when she can't even manage a rice cooker.
