It's wonderful.
The people who hated it were pretentious idiots who couldn't understand what fun is, and were trying to paint anime as a mature and serious medium for mature people like themselves, based on only having watched a handful of high budget scifi movies in the 90s.
That being said, if you go and dig through old communities of actual anime fans at the time (80s and early 90s), they had a much better perspective on these kind of things.
