His life is being threatened, his friends' life is being threatened as well and he is confused and frustrated by it. It's not like he's just going to say "Ok practice break let's just train in swordmanship or magic or whatever instead of ending the loop as soon as I have the chance to". Keep in mind this is not a groundhog day situation. In groundhog day the loop was completely unavoidable, whether he died or not the reset would happen. If he survived it still happened.
