Would you help me second-guess a translation, /djt/? Source is LoGH 1, context is the way in which Yang's CO looks down on him.
Original moon:
>若いながら歴戦の勇士であるはずなのだが、そういう印象をパエッタはまるで受けないのである。後方勤務本部で兵士の給料の計算でもしているほうが似つかわしく思えてならない。
Authorized translation:
>Though he was young, he was the hero of a historic battle, and yet Vice Admiral Paetta didn't get that impression from him at all. Still, when the officers' salaries were calculated in the rear service at headquarters, it was clear that he was being well paid in accordance with his record.

Shouldn't the second sentence be more on the lines of:
>He (Paetta) couldn't help thinking he (Yang) would be a better match for the rear service headquarters, calculating soldiers' pay.
or am I missing some grammar point here?
>>
So let me get this straight.
A verb in plain form is always the end of a sentence.
If it's within a bigger sentence it is a clause that modifies the noun after it?

>>

No?
Isn't Japanese SOV?
>>
>>144028059
Yes, but verbs are not obligatory. Adjectives, copular words (だ・です), and bare nouns aren't considered verbs.

Tbh one of the problems with tae kim, another one is misexplainig が.
>>
>>144028160

So TK says verbs are the only thing required by a sentence, but that isn't actually the case?
>>
>>144028160
Thanks.
Still if it's a verb in plain form within the sentence it's the end of a relative which modifies the noun that follows it?
>>
>>144028293
Pretty much. Japanese doesn't treat "this is a grammatically complete sentence" the same way that english speakers do.
>>144028301
Usually. Sometimes it's part of a fixed adverbial phrase, or similar. Use the rikai.

>Just starting out, was wondering if it's a good idea/worth it to learn kanji and vocab at the same time with 2 anki decks? (All in one Kanji and Core2k)
It's a better idea than doing kanji first.
>Also, for a beginner, is imabi better than Tae Kim?
For a beginner? No.
>>
>>144028518
Avoid Imabi unless you're some kind of linguistics genius

As for kanji/vocab, I'd say just focus on vocab for now, and if you find yourself having trouble remembering kanji and kanji readings a couple months down the line then you can think about doing kanji study, I'd recommend KD over RTK if you ever do do it
>>
>>144028566
Thanks
By the way, how many words do you really need to learn from core2k to be able to read simple things like yotsuba (assuming you know the grammar) without looking up every 30 seconds? I really want to hone my grammar skills on examples because that's how it worked in other languages for me.

I'm like 1200 cards into anon core 5k and I can read things with some difficulty. I look up multiple words every single sentence but it's enough ground to be able to progress from sentence to sentence without constructing an interpretation for each one.

Thanks.
I usually use a text hooker, but I guess it's the same.

>>
>>144029444
Rikai is better than parsers because you manually set where the word you're trying to read starts. Parsers are bad at drawing boundaries between words at the right places, and that's also one of the skills you have to get best at. So it's both messing up words boundaries and making it harder for you to get good at it. There's a reason the firefox text grabbing guide is so frequently recommended.

たしかに doing kanji study without mnemonics is pretty retarded, wasn't really trying to defend doing that, but I'm sure it would still have its benefits, for example it would still make learning vocab somewhat easier just from the exposure of all the kanji, whether or not it would be worth the time investment is another story, you'd have an easier time telling apart similar kanji too even without having to use mnemonics

it becomes "acknowledge evidence" as keywords, and every time I'll see the word (once I have learned those keywords, which will take me a month) I'll at least remember the keywords.

I'm really wondering how well/bad it'll work. I'll report back in a few months.

>I assume you were the one who said that he incorrectly explained 好き being a verb meaning to like, which it is a stem of.

Navigation is not a verb. It's a noun.

好き is not a verb. It's a na-adjective.

Tae kim says 好き is a verb and that が is marking the object. This is wrong and confusing on so many levels that it's just plain not acceptable.

>Also, Tae Kim is pretty unconventional and tries to reinvent a bit it feels like, so there might be confusion.

There's unconventional and there's wrong. If you want to use grammatical terminology, you have to use it correctly. You can't repurpose "object" to mean something it doesn't mean. This isn't a technical thing. People literally get confused by this.

He could say [people use patterns like Xが<adjective> to talk about things that are out of X's control, like Xが好き "I like you"], but when he outright breaks japanese's morphosyntactic alignment in order to gloss over wording differences, that's not okay.

How do I get over my moe-induced anxiety for to watch New Game?

The feeling when you actually read and understand stuff for the first time is great too.

After getting up with the grammar, I remember having lots of doubts when I read some eromangos and I was "no way, it's making sense... but is it correct? I dunno"
When I noticed I read the entire thing and everything made sense I was like "omfg... I... ACTUALLY... CAN!"

Does writing out the kanji actually help to recognize or does it make it a little bit harder because you also have to learn to write them on top of learning to recognize them? I've been having a lot of trouble keeping up with anki and it is really annoying filling up pages and pages of legal pad with kanji.

The thing is that I really don't ever see myself writing japanese... I may type it sure, but mostly I just want to read.

Has anyone either:

A: Figured out how to auto-copy Chiitrans Lite text to the clipboard, or

Try writing it in a sentence or reading more instead. I think a lot of this shit is contextualising it. Just writing it down is only half the solution.

Upon doing research I happened upon the full VNR application. What the fuck is this program? It has this bizarrely huge suite of visual novel reading features. It has a huge library of visual novels that it auto-detects the text threads for and hooks effortlessly. It has text-to-speech for unvoiced lines (and auto-detects which lines are voiced or not so you don't get double voicing). Not that it concerns DJT, but it even has an online subtitle database for community-sourced line-by-line VN subtitles. Yet, I have never heard of it at all. Why has no one on DJT ever mentioned this?

Unlike ITHVNR this seems to capture this text properly (at least for this one game). And unlike Chiitrans Lite, this program also has auto-copy to clipboard. So it seems that I will be using this for Hitori no Qualia, at least.

But it also has this futuristic ricer UI and changed my mouse cursor without my permission. I am just baffled at what I am seeing right now because of how out of the blue it is. So, go check out VNR if other stuff isn't hooking your game right, I guess?
>>
>>144061819
if VNR is hooking the game but ITHVNR isn't you should make a post about it in ITHVNR's hongfire thread
>>

I watched anime for 5 years and learnt Japanese
>>
>>144061881

The problem with ITHVNR's hooking was that the game switches between three different threads for displaying text for some reason. If I switch between the display threads on ITHVNR all the text is indeed being captured but it's not all-in-one. This is a pain in the ass since I'm using the Firefox rikai auto import setup. VNR just seems to work.

This seems more like a design flaw with ITHVNR than something that can be fixed easily but I could go make an account and make a post anyway, I guess. I guess I'm just surprised DJT has suggested ITHVNR and Chiitrans Lite a bunch of times but VNR not even once, at least as long as I've been here.
>>
>>144062381
I've seen VNR get posted a lot but it's such a massive and cancerous program that nobody's willing to recommend it for the sake of the few games it does better than ITHVNR.
>>
>>144057541

stroke order of radicals s picked up very easily though.
>>
>>144061819
VNR is the worst thing ever made. I was forced to use it once for a VN and it was awful.

It's bulky and CPU-consuming. It has a default setup that assumes you're a machine translating pleb. The text to speech is of course cancer, as anyone with a brain would realise and not set as default behaviour. It has a huge variety of completely useless features that we will never need and only serve to take up space and processing. It overwrites your mouse, scans your files freely at will, tries to get you to use it as a Steam-style app to start your VNs from.

I'd recommend just manually looking up kanji through Jisho radical search over using that piece of shit.

I know we have a few people here playing old SNES and PS1 games and stuff, I assume this would be of interest to some of them too. I followed the instructions in the user manual and the demo but evidently screwed up somewhere.
