That's me half a year ago. I don't want it to sound trivial, but: give up on drugs / alcohol, tidy up your diet and eating habits, and hit the gym or pick up jogging (or other form of physical activity). You'll be able to concentrate for longer periods of time while retaining much more information.

And if time is a non-issue then - to prevent your motivation petering out - do it like that: more than 150 reps? Do just them, don't add any new cards. Fewer than 150? Add those 20-25 new ones. Doing it this way will take longer, but at least you'll how much time you can expect to spend on Anki. And you won't end up being overwhelmed.

why do people keep saying spoken Japanese is easier than learning to read or write it?

so many words sound and are said the same that most of the time I don't know what they're actually talking about
>>
>>143920054
That's the case for every language. You can become native tier speaker by just being around people who speak it, even if you can't read or write the language. This is how babys learn it after all.

Yeah, I'm pretty dumb and didn't consider the fact that there are actually illiterate people out there that have no problems speaking the language. My bad.
>>
>>143920054
Learning grammar rules and vocab in romanji followed by practising speaking and listening is all you need to learn to speak and listen.
Learning thousands of kanji, the pronunciations and meanings, the stroke order etcetera is much more time consuming.

Yotsubato is aimed towards kids and the slang will fuck you in the ass. Having to constantly refer to the translations doesn't help either.

NHK Easy is aimed at kids but mostly foreign japanese learners. Articles are presented with simple vocabulary, are concise and even have built in look up functions for harder words. It might not be compelling, but it's a great way for you to gain confidence as you comprehend it yourself without relying on a crutch like translations.
>>
>>143924129
I got to understand japanese sentences through being a weaboo for over 8 years. When i finally got to study japanese i already could pretty much read it if it was in romaji. Just by watching hundreds (actually just a little over a hundred really) of titles with subtitles and playing through hundreds of hours of different games i could get structure of sentences, as well as base vocabulary.
I can understand you though. Japanese prepositions and suffixes are really quite different from western ones.
I would actually recommend watching anime with subs for some time.

>>
>>143926163
I'm serious tho. It can help if you won't just tune out japanese speech and would try to listen. That's basically a lot of examples of sentences, that you would immediately get translation for. If that's not the way to get the structure without actually sitting through textbooks and trying to wrap your head around something that natives know without thinking (actually can anyone please tell a better way to say "know without thinking" in English?) i don't know what is.
>>
>>143926430

It's shit advice to tell him to watch 8000 hours of anime to get fluent when he can achieve it in much less with less time and effort put in either

>>143926825
Beginners learn exponentially faster so it's not like you have to do one or the other

Grinding core2k and easy reading material isnt fun but it opens many gateways for fun learning e.g. anime with jp subs
>>
>>143925764
Try the DOJG, it has a shitload of example sentences and honestly your time would probably be better spent reading those for half an hour than reading something where half the content is stock phrases, i.e. hanahira and yotsubato

You can pretty much think as の as "reason of explanation", even when it's something like 俺の言葉 (my <> reason/explaining <> words) and not just a _'s_ or _of_.

With that in mind, you just mix の and は to get something like "reason/explanation for is (context)". I hope I'm making sense, if not, FEEL it.

For かい I'm going with the dic definition of "yes-no question".

The fact that you were able to even tell what the words in that sentence were shows clearly your progress, though perhaps small, is non-zero. Plus, hey, you learned at least one language already, right? But it took a while; most people don't speak even their home country's language perfectly until they're about 12 or so. So one can't expect too much after just 2 years; there's not much to do except keep practicing.

~ず is used as a negative verb ending, especially used in the sense of 'without doing', used for example in the term 親知らず, which can also be spelled 親不知, meaning wisdom tooth.

Buddy, I've been studying for around a year and 3 months. Halfway through, I fucked up and had to re-do all my progress after skipping Anki for a month, and I've gone through KD twice, and made it to 5k in core. I'm barely even JLPT3 tier, and my only reading is most of the volumes of Yotsuba and whatever porn I look at daily.

That page is a complete joke in terms of difficulty, you must have the worst work ethic in the fucking world.

Seems to me like you have a pretty good idea of what it's trying to tell you already. Stop trying so hard to come up with an English translation that makes sense, just getting a rough idea is good enough. That rough idea is going to get more defined the more you read.

>2 years
I'd assume you weren't studying consistently enough those 2 years, but if you actually were trying hard and in truth just lack the aptitude for language learning I'd be another one of those feel good "you can be anything" faggots so I'll instead resort to calling you a lazy retard.

>The inclusion of 「も」 must be consistent with the answer. It would not make sense to say, "I am a student, and Tom is also not a student."
Why?

>This is where the 「が」 particle comes into play. It is also referred to as the subject particle but I hate that name since "subject" means something completely different in English grammar. Instead, I call it the identifier particle because the particle indicates that the speaker wants to identify something unspecified.
Why?

>The first sentence seeks to identify a specific person for "student" while the second sentence is simply talking about the student. You cannot replace 「が」 with 「は」 in the first sentence because "who" would become the topic and the question would become, "Is who a student?"
Why?

etc.
>>
>>143933437
Same reason why we spell 'knight' with a 'k' and a 'gh': the pronunciation changed but the spelling remained static. That is, the topic particle was at some point pronounced /ha/ but at some point people started saying it like /wa/ for whatever reason, and the spelling stayed the same.

>the topic particle was at some point pronounced /ha/
I don't think that's true at all. Hiragana spelling used to be much more idiomatic than it is today, with words like 今日 being spelled けふ. I'm fairly sure that は as a particle was still pronounced わ in classical Japanese. There's a historical relationship between the あ, は and わ rows because they don't have true consonants in them, which is also why を and へ are pronounced strangely as particles.

Some other anon explained it on here a while ago, but I think the TL;DR goes something like "Both the は sound and the は particle used to be pronounced like [pa] but eventually the kana became a [ha] sound while the particle became a [wa] sound"
Probably butchered that explanation completely, but I can't be arsed reading the full explanation

The furigana might be a bit difficult to read though.
>>
>>143933675
If you read Classical Japanese out loud today you read は as /wa/ when it's a topic particle, but in ancient times the whole ハ行 was pronounced with /p/ sounds, hence why adding a dakuten changes it into /b/. So if you go back far enough it was /pa/, which changed into /ɸa/, and at some point the /ɸ/-sounds turned into /h/ (except for /ɸu/ which stayed as is) and either the same time or shortly thereafter the ハ行 kana that weren't at the beginnings of words mostly changed into ワ行. There's all kinds of research on this.

How have you done all that in such a short amount of time? I'm like 1000 cards Into KD and lately I only recognize like 40% of the old cards that show up every day.

I've only been doing like 10-15 new cards per day. Maybe I should decrease the amount.
>>

I don't think kanji is the issue with Yotsuba either
>>
>>143934503
I did 20 a day the first time, and 40 or so the second time through. Never dropped below 95% retention, mnemonics are great.

If you're only getting 40%, that sounds like you just aren't paying any attention at all to anything you're doing.

>>143935212
One tends to get that impression about prepositions in natural languages. For example, the English preposition 'at' can indicate:
>location or arrival
>time
>point on a scale (e.g. "prices start at $100")
>in a given condition ("at a serious disadvantage")
>indicates the object of certain verbs (e.g. "look at")
>directed at ("to throw something at someone")
>the method or means of an action ("at knifepoint")
Some of those you may consider redundant or splitting basically the same sense across more than one entry, but even so it's quite a few.

I think there is a problem in communication somewhere. Are you talking about learning from anime BEFORE you started learning japanese or AFTER?
>>
>>143934607
>>143934612

Just the meaning of the kanji. I'm getting a little tired of KD because his mnemonics fucking suck most of the time and sometimes doesn't even have anything to do with the radicals used, not to mention the on readings all use the same shit like "see her underpants" for shu and other hard to remember garbage.

For example, 咲 / Bloom

"When Fabio puts your clitoris in his mouth, it will bloom so bad he will take you to horny heaven."

Nigga in like 4 months when this kanji shows up again all I'll remember is "mouth" and "horny heaven". If he kept his shit short and didn't include so many random words in the mnemonic like fabio, bad, take, etc. this shit wouldn't be so hard to recall.

You don't have to think about mnemonics to read numbers or symbols, you just do it. It's really all about repetition until it clicks with you. You have to get to the point where you aren't thinking about the meaning in English, if you try to translate everything back to English to understand it you'll never be fluent.
Some anon further up was complaining about not being able to put together sentences he was reading, when his real issue was that he was trying to translate it all back into English to understand the meaning.
Mnemonics are good for initial learning but you should strive to get past them.
