>Of the 46 winning stories listed on the "Net Novel Prize" contest's website, 14 have "alternate world" directly in the title. Some examples are
>The Unparalleled Saint Salaryman and the Road to Surviving in an Alternate World
>Alternate World Station Café
>Alternate World Brothel Manager
>Item Collector in an Alternate World
>This Alternate World's Magical Language Looks Just Like Japanese
>Doing My Best to Pet Fluffy Things in an Alternate World.
>The Chronicle of the Male Virgin Who Travels to the Alternate World Chiirem [cheat + harem] and Gains Healing Magic.

> "Alternate World Station Café"

Wow these authors are not even trying anymore, wish I knew moon language.

It's a shame because there are many ways to make the Earth human transported to alternate world interesting.

Yet for some reason their alternate world is always the shittiest most generic MMO-style fantasy setting imaginable.

Why no sci-fi alternate world? Why no alien planet? Why always RPG mechanics? Why do none of them ever try to leave the alternate world?

It's like they're limiting themselves on top of limitations.
>>
>>143901334
>NGNL
>not trash
>>
>>143901829
Shitty RPG settings are easy to settle into for both the reader and the writer because you're already familiar with everything that goes on.

Something like an alien world would require imagination since you'd have to come up with most of it yourself.

>>
Iseikai can be good, there's a lot of options with the setting/plot/story/characters/etc.

But adding the harem element makes it shit pretty much every time and it's not because all harems are bad but because if you have to put someone in an alternate world and then give them a harem it shows you are a terrible uncreative writer and there's almost no chance your story is decent.
>>
>>143901829
In case you seriously can't figure it out - they are only making isekai stories in the first place because they want to make these generic MMO-style NEET isekai stories. It's not that "parallel worlds" as a general concept is hip right now, it's that these specific kind of isekai stories are hip.
>>
>>143899195
>Of the 46 winning stories

>>
You know, I'm kinda surprised that no one's really tried to do a work based on the opposite, something like a regular knight transferring to our world, seems like a pretty obvious route considering Japan has a bit of a penchant of subverting present tropes and genres. Not in the sense of demon kings and heroes and whatnot like in Hataraku, but just a normal dude drafted into the regular army, transferred into our world while near-death on the battlefield or something.

I'm pretty sure you can get a bit of a mileage out of that, if the author chooses to tackle a serious theme or an introspective look of our modern society from an outsider or medieval perspective, for better or for worse.
>>
>>143901829

>>143902022

And ruining the idea of alternate world setting while doing so?
>>
>>143900638
No he really is, I find the idea of a protagonist that is deconstructed and revealed to be pride and all his actions and speeches were nothing more than to raise himself higher.

I thought a key feature of isekai was an MC form our world ending up in a parallel fantasy world. So you're telling me even a story that doesn't have characters that arrived into the fantasy world are isekai as well?

Because that is half of all fiction ever. I mean I get why they'd ban stories with MCs reincarnating into alternate worlds, but why ban alternate worlds altogether? That's much too vast a category.

If the nip can ban isekai, why can't we ban fucking zombies?

Actually, I'll just combine both. It's an isekai story where the MC is an ancient, poweful lich who has finally burned out all life on his native world, turning every single creature on it into undead minions and a font of power.

He sacrifices millions of them to open a portal to another world, ours.

From our point of view, what starts out as a regular zombie invasion turns into an even greater nightmare when the Lich starts bringing Zombie giants, Zombie Dragons and Zombie mages into our world along with the hordes of humanoid and beast zombies he starts with.

Can our modern weaponry stand against his planet-encompassing might?

Overlord in reverse, kinda.

Easy, just have the real mc be the native of the Fantasy world and the partner be part of the group that is summoned. And the partner is this kind of guy. Instant good story. The main thing is to make the japanese look amazing in the other world.
Nearly every isekai has some reference to japanese culture or japanese morals when they talk about the world they get into.
Either they want to remake japanese food in that world, or they act too formal, or they don't rape enough people, or they don't like slavery, etc.
Its ironic since japanese work life is worse than slavery.

Yeah because the author was writing a more shounen version of Ranma, which constantly had the same characters fighting each other with different tactics. The fun was just sucked out which is why people complain, and no one cares about Rinne because its basically Ranma with more comedy.

Quality is a funny thing really. It only really matters in anime. In manga and LNs, you never talk about "quality". You just talk about how stupid the developments were which is the point of creating so many similar stories. They develop differently, while keeping to the same theme that the audience wants to see. A majority of people enjoy this, but there are those who will keep wondering why there's so many similar shows and call them copies. It's just not for them, but they shout the loudest so it's kind of annoying.

>>143903525

I actually started writing my own. It's about an early 30s man who has a normal and perfect life on Earth. Good job, wife he loves, a young child and another on the way, friends, loving parents. One day he's summoned to another world and instantly beaten and made into a slave. He spends years this way learning to feel nothing but contempt and hatred for his new home which has a history thrice as long as ours but has never progressed because of the reliance of basic elemental manipulation magic and rampant slavery.

He eventually frees himself by murdering a rich mage master and impersonates him, learning about magic and more. Accumulating wealth and power with basic modern world inventions, a greater mastery of magic from modern understanding of physics, and ruthless ambition, he gains control of the kingdom he's in, and eventually forms an empire and founds a religion.

The point of the religion is sacrifice, which he uses to fuel a powerful ritual that match the power of the gods that transported him originally, and does send him home, but destroys the world at the same time. As he returns, the gods who transported him thank him for destroying the failed world they'd sent him to.

His magic sends him back home exactly when he was first taken, his body rejuvenated to be the same age. But the atrocities he committed have irredeemably change him, destroying his once perfect life and leaving him with an ever growing hatred of Earth, and a realization that he retained his mastery of magic.

I'm concerned it's an overall too depressing story and the MC is too evil, but those I've sent it too enjoyed it, so whatever.
