A lot of it is hilarious gag material but in the end Handa's an anxious guy that has poor social skills and feels no guys would want to be his friend and no girl would ever want to date him.
It makes sense that he turns into a very sensitive and arrogant person as he is at the beginning of Barakamon ,he's prideful and closed off and loses himself in calligraphy.

That's not the point. The point comes in the misunderstandings which get increasingly embarrassing and bizarre, it's a play off social anxiety and low self esteem. He's not mysterious or oblivious, he is delusional and misinterprets everything wildly, to the point where in the manga he thinks students are plotting to kill him at one point. Don't know how the anime will pull it off but the manga's got some hilarious and absurd shit.

Handa is pretty messed up.
To outsiders, Handa seems to be surrounded with friends but Handa actually believes everyone is just pitying him even until highschool graduation and his so called friends continually reinforce this mistaken belief of Handa by never actually correcting it.
The author tried to play this off as a humorous gag but it is pretty twisted if you think about it.
Leave the black comedy and dark humor to SZS's author because when you try to turn a joke into a serious condition that heavily affects a character to the detriment of their entire life, it doesn't feel funny anymore.
It just feels like the author is bullying Handa in a malicious way.

I like it for what it is but it's certainly not what I expected or hoped for. It feels like a completely different anime that has nothing to do with Barakamon.
Their decision to go for this instead of a true successor to Barakamon baffles me. Most people who watch the first episode want loli comedy and some soul searching.

Can I complain about the first episode just being sorta shit in it's own right instead, or are people going to have to put up with "you just dislike it because it's not Barakamon" all season? All the characters were annoying, the animation was shit, the humor wasn't funny and even the OP was pretty bad.
The manga has fans on here so I'll have to assume that it gets better down the line or something but I personally don't want to watch any more of it, this episode was just that bad.
