Koe no Katachi will be better than Kokosake. Why? Naoko Yamada is better director than Tatsuyuki Nagai, and Reiko Yoshida is better screenwriter than Mari Okada.

Unfortunately, you forgot to account for Ooima, whose abysmal skill as a mangaka drags the whole thing down past Kokosake.

KnK is her first manga. For a rookie it was pretty good.

I'm exaggerating in that she's not the worst mangaka ever and could obviously improve, but the manga is not good and I don't see the story suddenly becoming great just because the screenwriter is competent.

>>143880273
>For a rookie it was pretty good.
You have some pretty low expectations for rookies, then.
>>
>>143880600
What other rookie mangaka has had a series as successful as KnK was?
>>
>>143879268
Koe no Katachi (the manga, the oneshot was good) is shit. I doubt the movie is gonna be good when the source material isn't.
>>
>>143880774
>successful
Wait, in what way? Quality, or commercial/critical reception? If it's the latter, then that very clearly isn't what I'm talking about, and has no relevance. If it's the former, then just recently Kogata Ku's debut Uchuu no Profile has been really good, and I'm now keeping an eye out for new stuff from them.

Koe no Katachi was a success both commercially and critically, winning an award for best manga from a rookie mangaka and gaining a sizeable fanbase. It sold more than 250 million copies and got licensed in several other countries.

>>
Getting rid of most of the side character involvement in the manga for the sake of making the movie shorter is a bad idea. The side characters are the ones who trigger the drama.
>>
>>143882389
There are a lot of good side characters though. Ueno, Yuzuru, the two mothers, even Sahara
>>
>>143882389
I'll take the manga's low points for its high points over the one shot's nothing.
>>
>>143879268

None of this shit matters if it doesn't have Aniplex and Nogizaka shilling. Also shouldn't you people be in the other they'd arguing over Kyoani vs Shaft for the 12000th time
>>
>>143881446

I'm legitimately surprised A-1 didn't snatch it up instead.
>>
>>143883244
No one on /a/ cares about or even reads that Umino series they're making next season, the few who do already are worried that SHAFT might ruin it with their cookie cutter Bakeshit template direction.
>>
>>143883244
So what Aniplex shilling isn't even guaranteed success these days look at kiznaiver
>>
>>143883032
By nothing, you mean no haphazard melodrama? The one-shot told a simple story, it told it decently, and it finished. It was still basically an inferior deaf version of Kitoh's oneshot Soiled, Beautiful, but it was fine nonetheless. The serialization tried to stretch that out into a series of big emotional moments and lengthy traumas, and it didn't work.
>>
>>143881413
That's not how you spell Sahara.
>>
>>143883375
Okada shows are absolute failures 90% of the time, not even the shilling power of Aniplex could have save the series.

>>
>>143883458
The oneshot didn't really have an ending, unless you think a quick apology and giving back the notebook is enough to mend all wounds makes for a satisfactory conclusion. I think the problem with this is it doesn't really show any of the agonizing and guilt Ishida felt that was shown in the serialization and worse it makes Shouko look like some type of jesus level "turn the other cheek" type forgiving saint because you don't get to see how she blames herself for lot of other people's misery which again the serialization does include.

>>
>>143881446
>got licensed in several other countries

what. is that an achievement? is manga getting licensed in other places so uncommon?
>>
>>143884244
It is. Very few manga actually get licensed, only the most popular ones which coincidentally are the ones that /a/ talks about the most like the bunch of casuals they are, so it might appear like that isn't the case.
>>
>>143883726
I don't think the oneshot's ending was great, but the series had the same issue, honestly. The post-suicide-attempt section didn't really address anyone's mental shit adequately adequately for me, and then we timeskipped and they're adults and yet we didn't really see any of them get over their issues. I mean, I didn't feel like we even saw adequate healing/therapy for Shouko, let alone Ueno or Kawaii or fucking Mashiba, who is probably going to rape and murder those students of his. If you dislike the oneshot ending, I can't see how you wouldn't hate the series' ending.

>>143884387
>Very few manga actually get licensed, only the most popular ones
This is entirely false. MU lists almost 6000 non-H manga licensed in english (a bit over 5% of all non-H manga listed there), and that includes tons of random shit /a/ almost never talks about.
>>
>>143884387
It's not that important in the large scale of things.
>>
>>143883458

The one shot was incomplete though. Akin to the likes of a pilot episode for Breaking Bad.
>>
>>143884703
I never watched Breaking Bad, but no, I don't think the oneshot was incomplete at all. It covered a story of bullying and then threw on a happy ending. There was no incompleteness there, nothing that needed further exploration. The serialization didn't really "complete" the oneshot, it just used the oneshot as a backstory, added people, and explored that cast's dysfunction for sixty chapters.
>>
>>143884605
It's not that I dislike the oneshot ending, it's more like I don't think it's much of an ending at all. It just feels more like a pilot episode like >>143884703 says and for all the faults the serialization has, it does provide closure on a number of plotlines, not all of the, but the important ones. And Shoko does have her moment of catharsis, it's what the scene at the bridge after Ishida wakes up is about. Like all this time she's been dwelling on the fact that from her point of view, she makes things worse for the people around her just like how Ishida guilted over all the bullying he did as a kid. But in the end, he tells her that those feelings aren't worth dying over because he himself contemplated suicide at the beginning of the manga, and it's how they both are able to move on together.
>>
>>143885011

It was abrupt. The series was all about him feeling redemption. Coming into terms with what he has done. I mean the climax itself was him questioning whether he deserved to be happy.

Sure the series itself was a roller coaster of drama but it was not just for the sake of making a scene. It was all to flesh out Ishida himself. Ueno was probably the unsung hero here as I still think, even with all the hate she got, she was still the most interesting character.

There was already a good discussion about this in the earlier thread. All of it contrasts
>>
>>143885011
Sure you could look at it that way, but if it had ended with the oneshot then all you get out of it is "bullying is bad, but forgiveness also comes easy". If it was left at that KnK would've never gotten as much notoriety and certainly not a movie adaptation.
>>
>>143885011
>>143885236

To add, all he did to make up for Shouko came to a point where he was questioning his motives. Was he trying to make himself feel less guilty or was it all as sincere as it could be.
>>
So, how do you feel about the movie focusing on romance?
>>
>>143885236
>>143885456
I guess my view is that that wasn't something we necessarily needed - I didn't read the oneshot and see it as a set-up for a longer story yet to come about his redemption, I read it and just saw it as its own small thing about a bullying incident, and I thought it did that pretty well, whereas the serialization didn't strike many chords for me.
>>
>>143879268
Kokosake was one of the worst movies I've seen in the last few years. The story is told in a way that makes you think there is some magical fantasy stuff is going on, but nope the girl is an actual schizophrenic with real mental issues.

Seriously, people who use this argument have to be the stupidest people ever. Your criticism sounds like autism. Your level of critiquing is as bad as people who say things like this:
