Orihime has always featured in the heroines spreads while Rukia in the protagonists one with Ichigo at times. Heroine isn't necessarily 'main heroic female character' but actually "love interest" at times.
Wiki Nip page also refers her as the heroine, no idea if it isn't some shipper edit.
Orihime ending up with Ichigo would be pretty shounen. Unless romance is the genre, mc tend to end up with the girl who lusts after them and specially one that can provide good genes for their future children to make a new generation story.

I'd argue that Zangetsu (or rather,YHVH) has something to do with it, along with Hollow Sora. But at the end of the day, without Ichigo she would never have gotten powers.
Moreover, her power did not grow stronger during the timeskip, merely more diverse. Her growth peak in pure power is during Hueco Mundo, when she literally resurrects the dead.
And that probably has to do with Ichigo, whose presence she could feel even through Hacchi's barriers with great accurracy (it might hint to a power connection, but it probably has more to do with its nature being very close to Hacchi's), and the Hogyoku during her time in prison.
And simple training with Rukia, of course. Because putting a soul in danger makes it grow stronger, as we were told a long time ago.

TK: Well, no. To begin with, a zanpaku-tou isn't something you'd swing with your muscles. Ichigo's zanpaku-tou comes from inside him, so he wouldn't find it heavy. If Ichigo tried to wield Renji's zanpaku-tou, Zabimaru, he'd find it heavy.
SJ: So it depends on the person?
TK: Yes. Zabimaru looks pretty heavy, too. Ichigo wouldn't be able to wield him. Renji would probably find the same thing with Ichigo's ZanpakutÅ, Zangetsu.
What that means is that zanpakuto are (almost) weightless for their users, since they're basically just a part of themselves.
Shinigami can still hold and swing another's zan, but they feel the full weight of the weapon.
As long as a Shinigami has strong enough muscles, he can use any zan as an ordinary weapon, as shown when Aizen used Rose's Kinshara to tie and pull Love.
