Fuck, I just finished watching the last 3 episodes back to back, and what a fucking disappointment. Not only did I find the art and animation less impressive, it's like they realised they actually showed promise for the first ~half season, so they went and hit every shonen trope that they missed.

Ehhh, maybe it's a nice thing to say to be a cool "special snowflake" contrarian. But not really. AoT still had a more interesting story, probably the most memorable 'enemies' in recent anime history, more fleshed out characters (even more in the manga), a better setting/premise, and had more entertainment value overall.
With that said, both series are shit and wasted potential. Kabaneri should have been longer, it could at least have been eye and ear-candy. Nothing compelling happened after the first episode, the build-up had no satisfying pay-off.

And I always hate these comparisons because I don't even like AoT that much, and the manga has TOO MUCH character development/lore/mysteries instead of titan action (which caused people to drop it).
