I'm pretty much of the exact same opinion, and I'm a big fan of the series so I'm really hesitant. I downloaded the original anime when SDR2 came to Steam and skimmed it and honestly, the biggest flaw was that it was *too* loyal of an adaption. They had the evidence gather animations and truth bullet shootings from the game, and in the anime it just felt awkward. I haven't seen anything by Lerche in years but people who watched AssClass and whatever else they've done since then say that they've really improved. Now that its a totally new format I have some hope, and despite everything else I'll stick with it til the end.
If I can make it through Utaware2mono's shit anime adaption after being a fan of that series for 6 or 7 years, I can survive this.

The cast was also part of Junko's entourage known as The Remnants of Despair, responsible for lots of murder and mayhem.
MC Hinata Hajime is actually Izuru Kamakura, Junko's right hand man and a person specifically groomed to have every Ultimate Ability. Originally he was a nobody in the school reserves.
Reason shit went down at Hope's Peak besides Junko cult was that they started bring in normal students to get some more pocket money. As a result lots of ideologies clashed since they'd be going to Hope's Peak but just get a normal education, while the Ultimate were the ones set for life.
Teruteru kills Fat Byakuya, AKA Ultimate Imposter. Pekopeko kills Mahiru because she may have killed Fuyuhiko's sister. Mikan kills Ibuki and Saiyonji. Gundham kills Nekomaru. Chaika unintentionally kills Komeada.
Chaika is actually a program made by Alter Ego to directly influence the game world so everything goes smoothly with Monomi, but she loses her ability when Junko and Monokuma show up, instead becoming a regular participant. And also not real, kinda. With the new character image its hard to say what she is now, but in 2 she's a fake at least.
The cast learn everything from the first few parahraphs and Makoto, Byakuya, and Kirigiri boot in the system to terminate a Junko AI from highjacking. Survivors decide to stay in the simulation to try and rehabilitate themselves as well as see if they can save their friends who are still alive but comatose in the real world. If you know your in the simulation its implied you'll be more likely to wake up, so Mikan and Komaeda are possible.
Creator said the stories of 2 were wrapped up in the game so we might not see them in Mirai-hen, but who fucking knows.

Usually I'm not a big fan of official translations sentence structure or use of terms when fan translations are usually better at differentiating between Japanese terms. Its a little off topic, but in Concrete Revolutio last season the "Official" Crunchyroll subs had Kaijuu, Bakamono, Obake and Yokai all translated as either Monster, whereas if a fan translator did it they'd most likely change it to Monster, Spirit, Ghost, and Yokai, repsectively. At least I would have anyway. There were a lot of conversations in that series that if you didn't know they were talking about different types of beasts and monsters you'd probably be as confused as shit.

People's problems with VLR tend to be finding most of the cast unlikable, and the atmosphere taking a nosedive from 999. Doesn't help that VLR was toned down specifically to appeal to Japs to try and get more sales which failed anyways.
Even worse is that, in the Q&A that was held after the game was released, a lot of the answers to fan questions was that the answer would come in the third game, but the third game only answered a handfull of them while ignoring a lot of them and retconning other plot points.
