I only got 1 kinda dodgy quality item from Manda and it was when I was in Japan and it was $20 cheaper than another one next to it, it has some noticable nicks/wear on it.
The odd thing I noticed was that it wasn't actually listed on their website, as I checked before I went in. I left it the first time, came back a few days later and it was still there.
So i'm willing to bet that they don't actually list any stuff with noticable defects or otherwise on their site in order to avoid any disputes with online/overseas purchases.

Look at the pictures Mandarake provides. If something's listed as damaged and there's no picture, e-mail them and ask for one.
Usually though, "box damaged" means someone touched it and it might have a dinged corner or some light scratches. I'd avoid things that are listed as "opened, used" but just "opened" might be alright. Depends on the figure.
