A good thing because they're actually faster than Nanodesu.

Yen Press hasn't sent out an actual DMCA C&D notice in a very long time, because Baka-Tsuki and Nanodesu tend to just take it down themselves without being asked.

In the last eight months Nanodesu translation of Rokka v5 has progressed by 68%. In that time Yen Press would have two volumes out.

Strike the Blood is pretty good, although it has some honorifics left in in the first volume with a bunch of "Nagisa-chan"s and "Kojou-kun"s in there, contrary to YP's usual "no honorifics" policy. These were excised for all subsequent volumes. They did leave "senpai" untouched though, which is funny because they didn't leave "onii-sama" in Mahouka although they did leave "biribiri" in Index.

Maou-sama is really well done and the translator demonstrates actual writing skill in addition to comprehensive skill which is especially important for translating comedy. There was a comparison of a passage from the official translation versus the BT translation in the archive, I'll see if I can find it.

>Yen Press
Yen Press localization:
They had signed the contract, completely unable to mount any sort of protest. The two of them stood there, their minds blank, waiting to regain their composure so they could reflect over these sudden events.

The place was a dump, its landlord a nonhuman behemoth. But what other living space would be willing to accept two homeless, unemployed young men, a concept that would send any sane landlord running at first sight? They resigned themselves to their fate, knowing the answer all too well. At the very least, they wouldn’t be rained on.

So, deep in their hearts, the two demons swore to work hard, make the rent each month, and otherwise have as little to do with their landlord as possible.

“‘You have to start somewhere,’ as they apparently say around here. Perhaps this is exactly what we need.”

They were overwhelmed in battle against the Hero, battered by the wild journey across the flows of the Gate, and mentally fatigued by their adventures in an unfamiliar world. Satan, the Devil King, was rapidly expending his magical force, his breathing ragged after only two hypnoses. The sense of extreme exhaustion was like none he had ever tasted.

So the Devil King fell asleep. And he stayed asleep for three days and three nights, healing his scarred body and drained soul.

Then, after sleeping three days straight without eating or drinking, Satan was taken to the hospital for malnutrition. The dehydration and vitamin deficiency had immobilized him.

In order to rescue his master—near death, skin dry and pallid, empty eyes staring aimlessly into space—Alciel had been forced to ask their landlord, Shiba, for help the third day after moving in. He had absolutely no idea what manner of medical facilities to expect in this world.

>Baka-Tsuki
Fan translation:

Satan and Alsiel sealed the contract out of the spur of the moment. They were dazed out for a while but they were barely able to recover and think about their situation critically.

The building was old and their landlord was someone who couldn’t possibly be a human. However, the two youths were unemployed and they had no address. By the rules of this world, would there be another place that would accept someone as suspicious as them? Looking at the situation like that, they needed to be grateful about having a roof over their heads.

The two of them vowed to live quietly and pay the rent on time, so that they wouldn’t need to see their landlord’s face ever again.

“In this world, there seems to be a proverb that says ‘one must endure unspeakable hardships for the sake of vengeance’[9]. This must be one of those cases.”

Their bodies were injured because of their fight with the Hero, their magical energies were spent, and they were swept up by the gate’s flow and deposited in a world that they’ve never heard of. Even someone like the Demon Lord Satan was losing his powers after using the hypnotic spell twice. Satan experienced tiredness like he’d never felt before.

To heal his wounded body and heart, the Demon Lord Satan slept for three days straight.

Sleeping for three days straight with his injured body without eating or drinking caused Satan to suffer from malnutrition and had to be rushed to hospital. He couldn’t even stand up straight because he was dehydrated and was lacking in vitamins.

To save his pale and dying master who was staring blankly with unfocused eyes, Alsiel had to request help from their landlord Shiba after just three days of moving in. Because they didn’t have a clue as to how medical attention worked in this world.
>>
>>143591161
Thanks.

This is an open question but did they really change CADs in Mahouka into brooms?
>>
>>143591586
They use "broom" as a translation for the abbreviated "houki" slang.

If you punch yourself in the head a few times it starts to make sense since they often shortened it from 'mahouki' (magical device) to 'houki' (broom) in the Japanese. It felt the writer was trying to intentionally create terms that were related to magic but have entirely different meanings.

So in context, the more formal "CAD" is still refered to as "CAD" (and CAD is used pretty much everywhere in the novel), while cases where the more informal "houki" is used became "broom".

I can comment on Paul Starr who's decent translator and Stephen Paul who's either shit or bearable depending on the material he works with. His problem is that he's just goes with "too damn American" type of translation for everything. His Vinland Saga translation is basically a joke. Durarara!! is better in this regards since it's contemporary yet the translation still reads very clunky.

Eh, sure, if you want to own it physically. The original is not exactly a masterpiece of writing to begin with and the fan translation was passable so it's not like you're getting all that much more out of an improved translation, unlike Danmachi where the original translation was barely comprehensible Chinese translation, or Maou-sama where a smooth flow of writing and good use of vocabulary and timing is essential for comedy.

In fact, please license anything that Nanodesu does.

>Using N2 for credentials to find a job as a translator is cringe-tier
If you are translating into Japanese, yes. If you are translating into English, English proficiency is more important.
>>
>>143604147
If you are at N2 level there's a pretty big chance that you will misunderstand some shit.

it's painfully slow when you are playing catch up.

imagine a manga, translated into the 700's got licensed, and the translations stopped. that's what it feels like.

Hmm it's only a few bucks might as well get it, thanks for the info anon

You can email Yen Press and ask them to license stuff

Only if that worked for the YKK manga.

I got the impression that Kevin Gifford didn't really understand the feeling that was described in this part.

How many novels did the anime cover anyways?

>>143606162
It covered the first volume

>Rokka no Yuusha

>WTF
Fuck off.
>>
>>143608504
sorry i phrased my post poorly, sleep deprived
>>
>>143606027
Why, what was being described? Should he have watched the music videos to understand it?
>>
>>143608802
You know how in anime sometimes a character stumbles upon a grisly scene and the camera does this thing where it shows multiple close up cuts of different parts of it? That's how people IRL sometimes perceive things when they are under great stress.
>>
>>143608999
So the translation conveys this inadequately? The sentence structure seems to me adequately abbreviated and disjointed.

Not really.
It was a solid detective story wrapped in an interesting fantasy scenario.

With the way Rokka progresses as a story I was fine with the summary of what happens in volume 6.
