To clarify about part 1, Jonathan and Dio. I don't think they're the best, they're just the ones I enjoyed the most. Part 7 is probably the most well done story, Johnny is arguably the best written protag and Kira does steal the show.
That said, part 1 was the first one I read. For a long time it was the only one I had while I was without net for about three years, meaning I reread it several times over, the plot and characters are basically ingrained into my memory. Jonathan is the most pure of heart guy around and I'm glad him and Dio managed to continue in some way to part three (even if part 3 kinda sucked). Part one does a good job of making you genuinely hate Dio without having to add supernatural elements, he seemed like an actual person that could do these things (originally), while Jonathan was the perfect protagonist to counteract him.
I found Valentine to be completely boring, despite how well done part 7 was. He never had me griped with his actions.
I really liked the way Straizo transitioned from a pretty one note hero into a more complex villain. His goal was relatable and I really enjoyed the fact that he knew what he had done was wrong yet accepted his actions without regret. (his fight was also a great opening for Joseph).
