My friend didn't like the ending, and thought it brought the show down. I found it oddly deserving and satisfying, although I can't put my finger on why.

The best girl won.
It was a great ride, I almost wish I were able to watch it monthly for the full experience. The ending bummed me out but I don't think it took away from the story, if anything it helped cement one of it's themes.

Because the theme of the show was futility. Every single person who tried to use the swords to accomplish anything failed and died. Only the ones who willingly gave them up and moved on with their lives were spared. Including Shichika, who gave up fighting in the end. Even the maker of the swords never got them to achieve their purpose of defending Japan. Togame died because she fought so hard for revenge, but killing the shogun accomplished absolutely nothing. Hitei tried to warn her multiple times throughout the series, and only killed her to save herself from suspicion of conspiracy. She wasn't a bad person and Shichika recognized that. The ending was perfectly thematically consistent and foreshadowed since the first episode, so while it might have been bittersweet, it wasn't unfitting. The point is that life doesn't go the way you want, and sometimes you have to roll over.

The signs were all there that she wasn't a good person. Being a cute tsundere doesn't exclude her from that
It was good, but it suffered from the usual Nisio problem of lack of focus, especially the first half of the series where the thematic throughline isn't as strong.
I also felt like Togame's death was a little unearned. It was foreshadowed, but I felt like that foreshadowing was crammed into the episodes 9-11, when it should have been spread more evenly over the whole series.
The last episode was GOAT, especially Shichika fighting his way through the swords and the ending scene with him and the princess going off on an adventure.

Watch the end of the first episode again when togame gives MC the 4 orders he had to follow. Her eye changes when she says that Shichika has to protect himself for the second time. This means that her love for him is all part of a scheme.

This. The ending is really satisfying since best girl Hitei won. She really cared for Togame and only gave the order to kill her to protect Togame from herself. If Togame wasn't so obsessed with revenge, they could have been friends.
Togame obviously said the truth about her intention to betray and kill Shichika, otherwise it would have made no sense with the general theme about the futility of revenge.

We were told that she was a daughter of a traitor out to get revenge against the government simply for her own self-satisfaction in the very first episode. She was a villain from the start, but her being the protagonist and how far she seemed to be from fulfilling her end goal endeared her to the viewers to the point where her actions and plans seemed justified, even though she was effectively intending send the country into chaos and sacrifice countless people to satisfy her desire for revenge.

The animation of this episode irked me so much. The fucking vidya style parts and the half-assed fight scene felt so out of place for the heavier tone and Nanami's death. There was no point either as it was just for that one episode, making it feel even more out of place.

Personally i liked the artstyle/animation of episode 7 more then the rest of the series. The bigger lines makes the artstyle more unique and interesting to me. You are right about the fight scene it looked pretty wonky. It might be a reference to a game like the scenes at the beginning of the episode.

I really wonder how I'd feel about the last episode if I hadn't watched it after twelve months. Watching the show over the course of that year gave the last episode such a higher level of impact. Ol' Nisio pretty much packed the entire thing to be nothing but catharsis. I don't know if I've ever gotten the same feeling of desolate completion as during the epilogue and ending narration. I've also never jumped up and shouted for a show like I did for CHEERIOOOO!

The only part of the show i found really enjoyable was at the very ending when the mc was going through the floors and breaking all of the swords like it was nothing.
The rest of the show was kind of meh. Not to mention filled with weird "lol randumb" decisions like "haha we video game now" or "trolololo you don't get to see the most interesting fight".
Also the sister fight was very anticlimactic for all the build up it had.
