He did something stupid because of his guilt.
He was blind to the people around him that is alive.
He was blind to the relationships and feelings of his friends and family.
They had to go through hell just to save his damn ass.
In the end he was just a selfish kid that couldn't even take care of his damn self.
Even a selfish kid that COULD take care of themselves is better than someone that can't.
I feel like this show is both underrated and underwhelming. IIRC the good parts were really well done and comfy af. But I little too much meh in between. If it stuck to a cour and a half with a more focused plot, then imho it would have been a contender for anime of the year.
