What I hated about TTGL was that there was little no variance in character personalities, and the characters themselves. Almost every single character is some derivative of "hot blooded" and it makes the character interactions very dull since there is no contrast.
Also, in my opinion, stupid is only cool in a grounded universe since its truly reckless and unexpected. Shit like the Yamato charging head on into a massive fleet of Garmillas in the remake. But when you expect asspulls at every fight and Simon just activating spiral power and winning and it gets really fuckin dull.

Viral didn't really interact with the main cast much ouisde of jobbing to Simon constantly and then joining them.
Kamina had good interaction with Simon, but once Kamina was gone Simon became a really boring character, since Simon being a pussy was his entire character.
Kittan was the only hot blooded done right in the show, and I like him just for that, but he didn't have any interesting interactions with the rest of the cast.
Rossiu had potential. But his character was completely ignored in the first half in favor of Nia sucking Simon's dick constantly and then his character went straight to shit after the timeskip, as if he didnt learn a single thing since he left his cave.

All the antagonists have the same motivation.
They aren't really evil, they just oppress (fuck tumblr for making this a buzzword) people and act like assholes to assure survival.
The leader of Simons and Rossius villages, the Spiral King, Rossiu himself and the Anti-Spiral.
Because Spiral Nemesis.
It's mentioned several times that Kamina could die because he's so reckless. But Simon is always there to save him. Then, when Simon isn't there to help him he dies.
Basically Simon's whole character development and how Nia affected him.
Before they go to fight the Anti-Spiral, Kittan told his sister and the child that he will tell them about his awesome adventures once he's back.
After Kamina dies Simon makes statues of him. Later after the Spiral King is defeated he builds a giant Kamina statue in the city.
Throughout the series there are little hints that Lagann is a living being. He even throws Simon in the second movie so he can reach the Anti-Spiral.
Plenty of little details you wouldn't notice the first time watching.

Lagann being alive is the sole reason one of the generals was defeated, the one with Simon giving his big speech. Its never relevant ever again outside of little hints, which just makes it an asspull and terrible writing. The Getter being alive was actually a huge plot point and one of the biggest reasons why it will destroy the universe.

When the battle ship first appears they are piloting Gurren Lagann together. Kamina is rushes straight forwards and they get their shit kicked in. When Simon takes control he pretends to run away and tricks them to fall into a big hole or something.
True but that's the problem. Simon isn't independent, he relies on Kamina to function. He tries to be like Kamina and Kamina encourages him and it works. But without Kamina he's fucked. Nia helps him realize that he shouldn't try to be like Kamina but just be himself.
I remember that Lagann didn't work when Simon was depressed. Not sure if it was hinted at Lagann being alive before that.
So you could call it an asspull but I don't think that it's an issue in TTGL.
But just being hot blodded is not good. It's what causes the Spiral-Nemesis in the long run. The difference between Kamina and Simon is that Simon is more reserved and accepts that he can't just do whatever he wants (like bringing back dead people) because there will be consequences. Kamina probably wouldn't have accepted that. That's also why Simon is taller than Kamina in the end. Clever writing, you see?
And before you give me the "hur dur but do the impossible" Gurren Lagann is a coming of age story and Simon makes the mature decision in the end.
In the series, after Viral throws Lagann Lagann gets his drills out and flies towards the Anti-Spiral. One could argue that Simon did it but the image I posted shows that Lagann has spiral eyes himself so it was probably Lagann. First image is from the series, last 3 from the movie.
